Hi mate

You'll need a control, something that you know breaks at 8lb

You'll also need to work out how to get something that can put 8lb worth of pressure in a steady pull to break the lines - something that is exact and can be measured to find out exactly when the line breaks. Maybe use clamps, a spring scale (try and find one that doesnt reset after it breaks - something that marks the maxium pressure applied) and then use another set of clamps (or a pulley) that can apply the required pressures.

You'll also want to break each line atleast 3 times, maybe more if you can be bothered as with all experiments you need to replicate the results, this will reduce the risk of getting a "bad batch" of line, or human error in conducting the experiment.

Looking at Fozzy's link, reminded me that you need to work out if the line is breaking at the knot or not. There is a link or maybe a magazine article on how to make up a contraption to conduct the experiment. I think its either in Modern fishing or fishing world (almost positive that it was modern fishing a few months back).
If the line is breaking at the knot, then the experiment wont give the expected results.

Let me know how you go and if u need any more help

yep as forsterfisho said try and take knots out of the equation. Maybe wrap a end length around a metal rod and glue or epoxy the wrap then pull the metal rod.

Maybe try a servo setup from a remote control car as you can get them that will pull well over 8lb and you can make small increases easily.

All the others have it spot on. But I would suggest possibly dropping your line class to 4lb. If the lines break higher than thier rating (which is most likely) it will take you alot more effort or weights to break the line, hence using 4lb or a lighter line class far easier for you to experiment with.

You could use a bucket full of water as your weight. Very easy to measure the weight of water and to vary it. Instead of tying knots you could use some steel rod and wrap the line around that a few times and then just put a loop over it to hold it in place. There should be enough friction for the line to hold without damaging the line like a knot will.

heres an idea for you, the guy who runs the website above lives about 60 Km from you in Cardiff, get in contact with him and see if you can go to his place and supervise the testing of the lines on his specialised line testing machine unless you have to actually make the testing machine yourself then he would be able to instruct you on the best way of going about it.
