Canberra and Surrounds - Official Thread

Serious Business.

I know of at least one more fellow Canberran breamer on the forum, was hoping there might be a few more.

Suggested topics for conversation:

- Nerriga Rd now completed. Only 2 and a half hours to St Georges Basin!
- Fresh water ferals and natives
- LBG techniques spots etc
- any easy drives to producting trout spots? Lure techniques?

I'm particularly interested in the last one. Anyone from around here have any info they could offer to someone who's a bit bored of killing carp and redfin? Any tips for trout?

Another Canberra breamer reporting for duty Mate I don't know of any 'close' trout spots, but considering the quality of fishing the snowy lakes produce, I consider 2 hours a fairly short drive for some of the best trouting on mainland Australia. Plastics around the edges ftw.

LBG got any large submarines in it?

I lived in Jerrabomberra for 5 years, before I moved up North! There is some excellent Yellow belly and Murray Cod in Googong Dam, it has risen heaps lately and there should be plenty of fish feeding over the new ground. There are some thumping brown trout in there as well as all the redfin you can handle ( although I mainly only caught little ones when I was down there).

Cheers,

Absolutely.

There have been some monster Murray Cod caught recently at the molonglo river end of LBG and big, big carp are a constant as well. Lots of decent redfin too for a bit of fun.

I was thinking of checking out Eucumbene. Is flicking plastics from the banks an option there?

I've never been too succesful at Googong. Even recently after the water has risen. Not even a reddy.

Eucumbene is certainly an option, and yes plastics from the bank is a good technique, especially with the lake on the rise.

Caught a few big carp on bream gear on one of tuggeranong's ponds today. It's the first time I have actually gone out with a can of corn and had a go at them.

The main point of difference for me was actually hooking up. The minute they feel any resistance they spit the hook. So I backed off all my drag and let the take the corn and apply more drag slowly till they hooked themselves. Is that the right technique?

I'm astounded people are catching these things on plastics!

I'm in Canberra! You already knew that! I'm rubbing my dirty little paws together waiting for all our waterways to be opened up again! My new challenge is fresh and my new target is yellow. Thanks for the advice Stompy!
