Are overhead reels drag durabilty under-rated?

may be a obvious question.
A calcutta 101b has 4kg drag ... As the shimano website claims.
Why does a so called "rugged" reel has such a low drag setting. Compared to the light-weighted Ci4 which has 4kg in the 1000 size?
Is there something I'm missing? Or is it just because of the lower-profile?
This may seem like a pointless rant, just curious as all.

bottom line is, would this be ideal for trolling / landing for barramundi fishing?

Thanks for any replies.

hey mate

not to sure what everyone else answers will be but for me, i can "easily" place my thumb on the spool for a fair few kg of extra drag when required...
also the extra line capacity may play a role? just imo...

need to remember that it is 4kg pulling straight off the reel, add that to a loaded rod and 4kg of drag is a lot of pressure, ive said before i do a fair bit of jigging and on light gear (stella sw5000) we pre set drag to 5kg fishing for kings/aj around the 1-1.5 meter mark and its more than capable of slowing those fish down

SAV you must have skinny kings over there a 150cm king down south here wieghs over 30kg and 5kg of drag wont slow one of them down for a while.

if u fish 3kg drag on a calcutta constantly the reel will still last a while
but if u fish 2kg drag on a 1000 size spin constantly the reel will be out of service in few trips.

i though the 200 sized calcutta had been the industry standard for heavy barra trolling/casting for about 15 years.

3kg of drag isn't a lot when you put 50lb braid on it though.

It seems most spin reels have about twice the drag for the line you'd run on them, while overheads/baitcasters seem to have their max drag about the 'max' of the reel.

I think its mostly due to the way the drags setup. On spinners, the drag rotates with the spool, while with star drag overheads/baitcasters, it spins after going through the gearing, so the drag washers themselves will be going slow/hard vs fast/soft (but multiplied). So, works out the capacity of the drag is less for a given size reel. Though, for most spinners it seems they have 'too much' drag (i.e. you wouldnt want to run max drag).

I used to use my calcutta for driftbaiting, and knew i could run 30lb line on it with no problems. Plus, one great advantage i liked matching the line was that if i cranked it as hard as i could, i'd get 6-7kg of drag, which was half the line rating, which made it easy to play around with without going too far. A lot easier on spinners or lever drags to push the drag to sunset or keep tightening the spool and go too much drag.

Abu Revo's have 24lb (nearly 11kg) of drag, not bad for a small baitcaster. Just chuck some carbontex washers in your reel, increase in smoothness and a little more pressure.
