Pflueger Supreme 9030XT

Hey guys, does anyone have a Pflueger Supreme 9030XT and what do you think about them? I was thinking of getting one for my G loomis DSR8200S.

nah but dads got a 8030 mg, and he couldnt be happier with it, he's already committed to getting another, but probably in the 8025. i have a 8040 and couldnt be happier light, smooth and a lovely drag, and am planning on getting a 8025 as well.
so yep, dunno about the xt model but the mg's are great

Don't think many people in Oz have these reels. Didn't stop me getting one though

It is very light and it looks friggen hot. Things I have noted:

* spare spool sux - chuck it in the bin

* high gear ratio - I'm indifferent

* smooth drag, but I find that it increases in very small increments .. maybe it's similar to a finesse type drag .. something I don't like because I got bricked into a snag a few weekends ago because I set my drag too light and took forever to tighten the drag (should have palmed the spool instead)

* don't think max drag is very high .. but then again, I have not tested it to it's max as I only use 4/6lb leader on it

* massive spool capacity meant 4 lb crystal fireline needed a heap of backing

Check out the reviews from these guys from the US. They like em.

yeah the mg's dont have an excessive max drag, but with a 30 it probably goes high enough for any application that you would use that reel for.
I have 2 medalists, a patriarch, a summit, and a supreme and all of them have a finnese style drag in my opinion, even the 7000 size medalist for its size, but i like it that way as it allows you to increase the pressure or decrease the pressure in minimal incriments, i can see where it would be a problem in getting bricked though.
one negative.
they mark easy, if you take good care of it you wont have a problem, but they dont bounce very good. and they are magnesium, so if you get a scratch you'll have to cover the mark with clear nail polish.
hope this helps
cheers

Thanks for you input guys, I think I will go ahead with the purchase. At this stage I was thinking of getting two of them and getting a pfueger rod to match. I was thinking a smaller rod to use in my Kayak and I can also use It around low bridges from my boat.

Hey mate,

Before you buy, send a PM to Charmellion or Charmelion (forgot the spelling) - he owns almost everything Pflueger and will be great help, i'm sure. He's always spoken positive bout Pluegers

Cheers

Yep, match it up to a Pflueger Trion Tournament 2-5 kg and you will have a pretty good setup. The mustard colour is a bit of a SOL copycat but I think looks better.

Just noticed you wrote that you wanted to match it up to a G Loomis - never had one of those rods but you may want a better reel for those rods.

I would buy another Shimano Sustain but I could not justify the $300 price to the wife and from what I have read the pflueger Supreme XT quality looks to be about the same for about half the price so I could get two for the price of one.

I wouldn't say that, that mustard colour is pretty unique. Nice flatty btw

but there are others who try it

Chamelion

I own (pflueger wise):

Medalist 6040 - Excellent, can't kill it and I treat it like crap! I should take a photo...
Medalist 6035 - As above
Patriarch wide spool (baitcast) - As above
Supreme 6030MG - Alright, needs TLC though
Supreme 6030XT - Disappointed, have had two and both have had similar gear issues. The low point of the pflueger line up imo

Have owned

Trion wide spool (baitcast) - Fantastic, I regret selling it
Illusion (baitcast) - Pretty good, but easy to overrun or backlash
Illusion **35 - Wasn't impressed, was very 'sloppy' internally. I returned it after a couple of days for a refund.

My mate owns -

President wide spool (baitcast) - Excellent reel, every bit as good as the patriarch just heavier and chunkier
Trion wide spool (baitcast) - Same as mine
President **30 - So so so so so smooth. If you don't mind the extra weight it kills the supremes, way way cheaper too.
Illusion **30 - Excellent, maybe my 35 size was a dud? Only issue is no roller bearing, so requires constant cleaning
Medalist 6040 - Same as mine
Medalist 6070 - Excellent surf reel. Doesn't mind the salt in the slightest, loud ass drag. I'm considering replacing my Emblem pro 5500a with one.

So, that said... Don't consider a supreme IMO unless you find one cheap. A birdy told me that Anaconda might have them on sale soon at a price you won't want to ignore.

If I was to buy a 30 sized reel right now I would give a Pflueger Arbor a shot.. I've never used one but I'm very curious! In fact, I might buy one soon just to satisfy my curiosity.

The reel I've been most impressed with of late is my humble Shimano Symetre which I purchased for $70 brand new from cash converters.. It's got me keen to try out something else in the shimano range, a Stradic perhaps?

Matt.

What sort of gear issues have you had with the supreme xt? Mine's been ok so far but I look after it quite carefully since it is a magnesium reel...

First XT was really grindy right off the bat.. Returned it and exchanged for another one. This one is a bit smoother but there is a fair bit of play in the handle, a bit like what you would expect from a really cheap reel. I've also had noisy roller (possibly rotor too) bearing issues.

The MG just doesn't feel as smooth as it did when I first bought it... I just expected a bit more.

I found the same too, having owned several small spin reels including Stradic CI4, Patriarch XT, Fuego-A 1000, Quantum exo 25. I found pretty much all reels get rougher wd time and wd trevally strikes. Except for Shimanos. Looking inside when servicing reveals a lot. The detail and tolerance of a Japan manufactured Shimano/Daiwa is amazing compared to the competition and hence the dollars.

Only the which are manufactured in Korea comes close.
