Is this rod damage terminal?

Hi

My brother in law managed to break my favorite rod - a 1-3kg Black Diamond Flats Ranger. He was trying to get a lure that had snagged in a tree and fell straight onto my rod rack!!

It snapped fairly low down between the reel seat and the first guide so was wondering how viable it would be to repair?

Any recommendations on Perth repairers?

If not - anyone got one they would be willing to sell?

Cheers
Darren

Darren,
it could be possible to repair it, but it could be tricky or even not possible. depends on the break and also rod builder really.
there is a fair bit involved so many rod builders may not be too keen on doing it.
i broke a rod recently way down the blank much the same as yours, luckily it was a really clean break (no splinters or cracks) so i was able to cut each peice back a couple mm (to get a square, clean cut), insert a length of graphite inside it and made it into a 2pce.

because the break was so far down and also its quite a stiff rod, it doesnt make any difference in action, but yours may be a softer rod so there might be a bit of a 'flat spot' when a peice of graphite is glued inside the rod.

There is no nice way of saying this, its a goner. Even if a rod breaks near the tip, it'll never have the same action again let alone the graphite is probably compromised lengthwise down the rod.

Darren, check your boat insurance mate, as I know some policies cover accidentals like that.

Thumbs up

In short, it is repairable and it will have little or no effect on the casting but may give you a little bit of a flat spot when fully loaded. Modern epoxies are incredibly strong, I would internally sleeve it with a 75- 100mm tapered sleeve (You got any old tip sections laying about? dosent have to be graphite glass will do?) epoxy it in. Fill it well then overbind it! Dont bother squaring off the ends just fit them back together.

Fixed!!! maybe not as good as new but it will be close, only pain could be getting the butt cap off to insert your tapered sleeve, other option could be drilling through it.

So there you go, Its a bit of stuffing about but if you like the rod why not fix it, even if you do find another it cant hurt having it as a spare

It is definately a DIY project getting a tackle shop to do it would be expensive and would probably just end in them flogging you a new rod!

It can be fixed. Being graphite makes it harder. It will end up with a fair old flat spot in the section that is repaired.

If the guides are any good look at keeping them and getting a blank to suit then rebuild. Do the math though on what you can get for the smae price as the rebuild, unless you like the custom.

I feel for you. I snapped a friends rod not long ago without much effort which set me back just over $300 for a rebuild on a 3-5kg rod.

Weigh it up.

Cheers guys

Have also noticed that unfortunately the grip section has a split in the graphite so would probably need a fair amount chopped off. Will see if I can get a quote from somewhere as would rather have as a spare

Mark - thanks for the tip on the insurance - am with Club Marine so will see what they say - excess may not be worth it tho......

Cheers
Darren

Sorry to derail the thread but those would have to be the worst looking doughnuts Ive ever seen, they look like a couple of dog turds that have been drying out in the sun for a few days.

Sleeve it up and epoxy it, at least you will have it to give to your Brother in Law when he buys you a new one He wont feel quite so bad if he at least gets something for his money, or are you letting him off the hook in the interest of Marital harmony???? I wouldnt you can always get a new wife
