Help Suzuki DT40 1983

Hi all, my dad bought a very cheap boat from another old bloke. I know nothing much about mechanic, the engine is Suzuki DT40 1983. We didn't test out the engine when we bought it but the guy said the engine was in working order. Well, I suppose we need to find a mechanic to check it out first just in case we end up on the water with the engine is not working. Can anyone suggest a good mechanic in Melbourne for me? How much am I expecting to pay in general? Also, the engine is not electric start type, my question is if I am to install sounder, gps and electric motor etc. Can I just use a car battery and charge it up?
Thanks for any advice.

engine & electrics

Get a marine mechanic to do an appraisal and take it from there. It is an old motor, so on the cheap, get a good deep cycle battery (for the leccy) and a charger to suit if the engine isn't beyond economical repair after the appraisal. If your mechanic is any good and the motor is worthwhile they will estimate the requirements and continue the repairs on from the appraisal upon your approval to continue with service and repair to join the appraisal costs into the service/repairs rather than seperate bills as components of the appraisal can cover components of service/repair where appropriate.

Good luck with your "very cheap boat from another old bloke"!
