Making Hard-Body lures!
My mate Jack and i have been making a few lures, we have worked out some designs, how to connect the trebals and how to put the bib on!
But here is were we are up to trying to find something like a plastic coating? to make a hard casing over the lure so water dosent seap in and ruin the wood. dose anyone know of a product that can help me, we have tried a water proof glaze that people use on timber floors but dosent work that well. if anyone has some advice it would be a great help! Lockyh P.S : will post some pics of the lures ASAP

yeah they swim really well, depending on shape of bib and body you can make a really wide wobble or a tight shimmy.
have caught everything from barra, jacks, queenies, trevs, cod, cuda, macks, flattie, bream Giertzy, to make the popper first you get a piece of wood or dowell (me and my dad use driftwood) and shape it on a sander to that cone shape (slighty oval not circular is my preference) then i drill a small hole at the front and the use a special sanding bit i made which is curved on top and has sand paper glued on. i spin this in a drill to create the cupped face. then i simply araldite in eyelets and attach hooks and away we go. ive never had a lure fail on me, and have caught barra over a metre, 1m + flatties massive trevs and queenies up to 8.2kilos hope that helped |

Just a bit time consuming, but it's very rewarding when the bloody thing works. Plus, by simplifying your techniques you can knock up a lure in a short time, even with simple tools. Junior hacksaw, files, sandpaper, carving knifes, and a small vice with cushioned jaws.
Finishing is easy, but also time consuming. Sand the lure smooth. Sealer: 2 coats, sanding smooth in between. Then undercoat. Then your paint scheme. Then clear coat. 2 part rod finish works very well, as does Envirotex, or outdoor/marine urethane. Be sure to test that your sealer and top coat material is compatible with the paint you use. |
