Daiwa Luvius 1003

Does anyone own one of these yet (the new model), and how do you rate it?
I am seriously considering matching one to my new BD 1-3 Bream Reaper.
I previously owned a Sustain 1000fd, spooled with Fireline Crystal, and found it appeared to be more prone to wind knots, that I put down to the smaller spool. I replaced that reel with a Steez 2508, also spooled with Fireline Crystal, and to my horror found that reel had the same problem. Changed it over Spiderwire Stealth, problem solved. I am now thinking the line, not the small spool on the Sustain may have been the problem.
Trouble is, I'm not quite sure, and I'm a bit hesitant on forking out the hard earned on another 1000 sized reel, only to find I'm having wind knot problems again.
What I really want is the Exist 1003 reel, only 160 gms. , but try as I may, I just can't justify over $600 for a tiny reel
But I'm workin' on it
Cheers,
Andy

Hey Andy,
I recently bought a Luvias 2004 and spooled it with Daiwa TDR sensor 6lb, cast's really well and is super smooth, at only 190 grams it is 20 grams heavier than the 1003. was thinking of getting the smaller 1003 but glad now that I didn't.
Cheers Dale.

Hi Dale,
I've already got 2 x 2000 size Luvius (previous model), plus a 2000 Fuego, so I don't really need another. You are right of course, a great little reel.
Compared to my airmetal Luvius (220 gms.), the new 1003 is 50 gms. lighter, and would be great on my short butt Bream reaper, or flats Ranger 1-3.
Cheers,
Andy

I'm looking at getting the same reel but for Trout spinning. I haven't decided which rod I will match it up to yet and same with line.

Does StrudWick have a website?

Andy,

I have multiple Exist and Luvias 1003 reels on my G Loomis ultra lights and on my Daiwa Midge Direction. I use 4lb Crystal fireline on all of them and I have not ever had a wind knot. I live in the US and I fish 1/16oz jigs mainly with a slow roll retrieve and a few hops and shakes. THe Exist is the best 1000 size reel I have ever used period! I am a former Stella fan and these blow them away. I also really like my Luvias 1003's I use them as much as my Exists and for the money difference they can't be beat. The 2004 size is great but I love the 1003 myself. If you can't bring yourself to buy the Exist then give the Luvias a try. I think you would be happy with it.

Hi Ranger,
Looking at those photos of your reels, the Exist looks like it is nearly worn out. You should think about selling it and treating yourself to a new one
I just happen to know someone who might be interested in it
I found the 4 lb. Fireline Crystal on the Sustain 1000 manageable, though I did have to watch it a lot more than my 2000 reels loaded with 6 lb. Stealth, which never gave me any problems. The 6 lb. Crystal on my Steez 2508 was a lot worse. Since respooling that reel with 6 lb. Stealth it has been perfect.
For that reason, I am a little bit nervous about going back to a 1000 size reel.
I wish now I had taken the opportunity of putting the Stealth line on the Sustain 1000 to see how it performed.
Cheers,
Andy
