I'd be interested to know what length leader you use ....

Well, I'd be interested to know what length leader you use? I normally use a rod length and a half. I've got to get some leader in the next few days and I am considering reducing the length of my leader as I remember fishing with XXX a few years back and he mentioned it is not necessary to have such long leaders unless you are fishing the bridges, etc. Less leader may save $$ however perfect knot will also save money .... however for me my knots on a boat are never perfect these days!

So I am interested to know the average length leader people use and do you normally base it on the environment or just standard for you .....

I generally do a full hand to hand span then half again, so generally around 3m. But I do not retie until I am down to about 40cm

Hi Carol,

I fish 1m to 1.5m max, no real rules for where either and i`ll fish it down to 40-50cm, same as when im up North. Main reason for me is pretty simple - I don't like to cast knots through the guides.

cheers

I try to get it to about a rod length. Any more and I dont like it...just hate casting with the leader still on the spool.

About a rod length Carol!

I use to have it wrap the spool a couple of times but noticed I would get the knot catching the guides on the way out.
Since i've shortened it to not go onto the spool I have not had the knot catching any of the guides.
I will fish that length down to about 2' or 60cm's

simmsy..

1 - 1.5m tops. I cant see the need for it to be any longer? Fish don't seem to mind. I've seen my mate catch bream consistently with pink fireline straight through with no leader - so go figure....

Hi Carol
I use about a rods length of leader, I too dont like to cast out with the knot on the spool (the knot will catch on something and cause a wind knot).

I usually use about 1-1.5m of leader and tie a new one on when there is about 30cm left but i have found the bream go for the lure more when there is more leader the bream are not as shy of the lure.

I go with the hand to hand span double uni to join in case your wondering cause it's easy and never breaks

I'll fish it down to maybe 30cms during the current fishing session but will generally retie it before going out again if it's under a meter. Basically I don't want to be fiddling with leaders while I'm out if I can help it.
