Hi, I live in Mandurah, & after reading articles in Fishing Western Australia about the hundred or so Black Bream recently caught in the Murray River near Mandurah have been fishing several times in past week from the shore. To date have only caught one tiny bream?
I caught that bream on a green shrimp fly that I tied. since then I have tried poppers & plastics up & down the Murray without success. The people in the article who caught the 100 or so were fishing from a boat. Is that my problem, not fishing from a boat? Appreciate any advice on why I cant hook up? Also is there a fishing group in the Mandurah region who could assist? Thanks, Ross |

Hi Ross,
Yep, a boat does make a huge difference for fishing the Murray. As you no doubt have seen, the banks are heavily timbered which can make it hard to get access from shore. Unfortunately, the sections with the heaviest timber are likely to hold the best fish (and be hardest for you to access). Also, in order to get those huge numbers of fish, the guys have probably covered quite a few km's of snags using the electric on the boat. You really do need to keep moving to find the fish in any river. A boat just makes it much easier to do this. If you can get hold of any kind of boat (doesn't have to have an electric) and just drift along casting into snags, you will get fish. Upstream of murray bend was the best, but with this rain, they will probably be downstream of the bend now as well. The secret is just to keep moving until you find them (the same could be said for any river). One other thing about the murray is that it seems to fish much better in the afternoon than in the morning. This could be because the tide it generally higher then and the snags have a good covering of water. I know that there are some spots upstream in the serpentine that fish well for bream from the shore. There is a guy (Sparrow) on the DohDohDohDohDohDohDoh boards who fishes regularly for bream up that way. May be worth heading over there and sending him a PM. Cheers

Hi James, thanks for the prompt reply. Yes the banks are full of timber & scrub. Will look for a boat! Thanks for the advice.
Cheers, Ross |
