Hard Drive Urgent Help

Hi all,
I have an old 20gig HD that the drive arm had had the Richard. I've been told these are replaceable, but I can't find anyone who will do the job at a reasonable price or touch it at all. I'm willing to pay as the info in valuable and the person who was baby sitting my backups has vanished off the face of the earth.

Please PM if you can help and we can come to some arrangement.

Thanks,

Thanks Pete. Appreciate the offer.

I'm fine with the new machine, just about to increase to 1000gig HD space, but this is from my old machine and I could really use the info off it. Lost count how many pics are there as well as other bits. Just a pain with the backups going walkies.

Bear,
It isnt going to be cheap I can tell you now. If the drive IS catus its going to need to be fixed by a pro. Gimme a little more info as to what you mean by cactus. Is it the drive motor, the arm, heads or just the drive board itself. Does it spin up still? Does it grind?
You should have my number. Gimme a call and I can see what I can do for ya

I agree, much better to get it done professionally, but it will cost. Someone like Ontrack Data Recovery might be the way to go (office in Perth). Depends on what the issue is as to how much, if any, can be recovered. I'm sure Bubba can sort you out.

I've had it looked at already and it's just the arm. Biggest issue is getting someone who can do the job or, more to the point, willing. At least them I can read the drive and get the info off it. At the moment it drops in and out.

Any data recovery people will do it, but they charge you big biccies. I will drop a quick email to the guys we use and see what they will charge for a 20gb recovery.

Oh if your sure it is the arm you are really up for the cash. Basically it needs to be pulled apart in a vacum sealed room and have the arm either replaced or the HDD plates put into the same drive case. There is also the issue of have you scratched the plates when the drive shat itself.

Being the arm Bear it maybe feasible to get hold of a hard drive exactly the same and drop the platter into that rather than fix the arm.

Let me know who use in the end and what they did.
