New rod, Thinking Loomis?

Hey guys
I just got me some full time work so im thinking of upgrading my combo. I wanna go really light this time and was thinking a 7' 1-3kg flats ranger but then i started thinking if there was something simmilar in a loomis worth looking at?
Im pretty vague when it comes to rods and reels and was wondering if any one could suggest some good ultra light 7' rods prefferably by loomis.

Im still deciding about reels but it will most likely be a twin power or a stella 1000 but i spose i gotta see how i go.

Thanks guys.

The g-loomis sr-842/2 (sjr?... memory block) is certainly the premier rod for light rods in its range. Made especially for bream fishing in our waters. U can only get it in 2 piece as far as I am aware. I myself am interested in purchasing one. If you're going to get the Silicon guides then the rod will cost up to $650. It balances very nicely, and has got as good as a cast as the HL-Z Saegakes. It is very smoothe in it's action and the fast-medium taper really assists in stinging the fish.

You can get this rod but with alconite guides (which is just as good) for around $400. For once, the 2 piece doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference in the loading up of the rod nor the grunt of the rod. It has a lot of pulling power with a finnesse tip.

The other rods in the top-end market are very nice and slick paying anywhere from $400-$600. You have the Saegake which I use, which has incredible pulling power for a light rod, a fast action taper and it casts incredibly long distances (further than any other rod I've tried). The battlers a very nice rod as well and the HL-Z Long Cast Special has the same ability.

The Smith rod in the same class is hard to pass up also.

All-in-all, all these rods mentioned are far above the class and will fit what you wish for no doubt.

If you're looking for a g-loomis, then the one mentioned is certainly a choice pick, as you are looking for something light.

Hi Dagga,

In response to your question as to whether Loomis has a rod like our Flats Ranger 1-3kg. No. But since we used to build Loomis rods, I can tell you that our Bream Reaper 7ft 2 pc is closer in action to their SR842-2 that many of the guys here have spoken about. Steve used to build this rod for Loomis but when he built it for Australia, he put the 4 inch grip on it. There may still be a few of these around but I believe the Americans still build this model with a longer grip as I have not seen anything else in their catalogue. I have pasted a copy of info from the US site below that may be of help as far as why Loomis made this rod model. They were not created for bream as they don't have any bream as in Australia but yes, many anglers adopted this rod for bream fishing in Australia.

"Loomis

Here's a real nice small-river trout and grayling rod. Ideal for 6-pound test, it has sufficient backbone to handle small bonefish and works well for shad. Spinner anglers will appreciate the light tip and fast action for fishing small to medium-size blades."

I forgot to mention: I still think the Flats Ranger 1-3kg in our BD range is more of what you are looking for, especially after reading your pm.

Cheers,
Cindy

SR842-2 GL-3 7'

Hi Dagga,

I have had one of these Loomis's for about 12 months now,SR842-2 GL-3 7' .
Fantastic finesse rod, and very light. (approx 89 grams)
More than enough pulling power though, handles kilo plus skippy from 20m easily.
One of the reasons I bought it over other rods is the warranty.
This is something you should consider.
Purchased from Campbells and it has a $130 lifetime no questions asked replacement warranty, and they are local.
I think BD have a very similar warranty. hth

cheers muzz

Dagga, you've used my SR842-2 and I believe you found it pretty crisp... The one you used is an IMX blank and my suggestion is to go IMX (or GLX) if you intend to get this model.

I believe the Bronzeback is a more gutsy kind of rod, but will definitely hold its own if you're hooked onto a 3kg snapper whereas the SR842-2 might be a touch soft for that but for bream, EPs, trout etc... its ideal.

Heya Dave as ruski said there is plenty on offer in regard to what your talking about. You stated you wanted something really light which narrows it down somewhat. You mentioned looking at loomies, well i suggest you get your hands on both a loomis and the main alternative which would be a battler/hlz of somesort.
These two different types of rods have a very different feel to them and im sure you will know which one you prefer almost instantly. All im saying is dont have your heart set on a loomy(or a battler for that matter) and then decide the whole feel of the stick is'nt really to your liking.
As far as reels go i would seriously look at an airity (not starting a daiwa vs shimano argument),that is if you can still find one they sold very quickly after the price drop These reel are are ultralight, which will go with your preferred set-up, and also you get ALOT of reel for the $400-450 your going to pay.

Cindy, I know you're selling Black Diamond rods, but you're quite incorrect when saying that certain other rods mentions aren't close to the loomis mentioned as to the BD Bream Reaper in terms of action.

I've had them and tried them. And for quality and money there is no comparison to the loomis mentioned nor the HL-Z rods or battler rods or even the Smith rods.

Nothing wrong with black diamond rods. Just, you can't compare them equally.

kamikazeghost,
Not sure what you are talking about as I wasn't talking about any other rods, except BD and Loomis. I can only speak about the rods I have experience with. We were building the 7ft BR at the same time as we were building the Loomis rods (particularly the SR842-2) and I compared them side by side. Also, I know the background behind these two models. As far as what I said about the Flats 1-3kg, I was telling Dagga, that out of OUR ranges (not any one elses) this was closest to what he was looking for based on his pm to me. Or in other words, if he was looking at our rods, I would advise him to choose the Flats 1-3kg for his requirement out of what we have to offer. As far as thinking this is the best rod for him of all brands, that is up to him. I have always said buy the rod that suits you. So there's no problem here with me. I think you may have misunderstood me.
