Swan Fish Kill
I've heard via the grapevine that there was a fish kill on the Swan at the Guildford end during the week. Did any one see anything?

Dont you love it when CALM lock recreational fishers out with the analogy of banning the kicking of a football on every local park with goal posts.
Yet the very real issues, the pollution and enviromental damaged areas arent being rectified with the potential to do the same damage as 1000000 rec fishers in one day.. With the massive profits of Water Corporation this shouldnt be happening.. Our government (Labour and the Greens) and governing departments are hypocrites and liars beyond their own comprehension. The Greens are focused on the man (recs) not the ball (the enviroment) Elected by Donkey vote |

Better take back my comments about there being loads of Bream in the Swan!
Thats really bad news, I would have thought that the authorities would have been on top of these problems by now, obviously not. Any one know what killed them this time? Rgd Mad Shad |

Probably the same thing that has been killing them the past few years. Algae levels in the Swan have been a problem each year for the past few years yet we put fish back in without fixing the cause.
I just can't justify it. Fix the problem, then get the fish back in.

exactly bear,
we do our best to release the fish but the goverment does absolutly **** all to prevent the river dumps etc, the river can only take so much and its time to change what happens in our river system. What can we do , were does our tax money go to? anyone got any ideas how we can protect our systems eco system?

Repair the 'riparian' zone upstream is what needs to happen.
However, has 'pest/hebicide' (or whatever else) been ruled out? Are these particular dead Swan fish definitely 'algal' fatalities?? |

The Ellen brook contributes more nutrient runoff then any other system, 40% + but only contributes 6% of the water flow. If you go too where it meets the Swan, you will find old bricks and rubble from where the property owners used to dam this off.
Then head to the vines golf course area and you will see cattle grazing in the brook it self.On your left you will see A millionaires property that looks like the MCG and its in Summer. You cant get grass looking like that without some sort of fertilizer , all too breed his thoroughbreds Apparently land care is supposed to be doing some work around this area, but all we saw was a few trees planted. A start would be to buy back at least 15m of land from the owners that back up too any system that flows into the Swan including the owners on the Swan, then plant thousands of trees so this could be used as some sort of buffer zone, get the cattle away from any system, this is no doubt one of the major causes I reckon when these new proposed developments on the Swan happen, it will actually be a savior for the Swan.Who is going to pay a million dollars for a property only to have a pungent stench from a dying Swan on their doorstep whilst they are sipping Chardonnay Wally Last edited by Wally; 08-04-2006 at 07:56 PM. |

The ABC (Perth) have done a TV interview with Frank Prokop of Recfishwest on the fish kills in the Swan.
Check out the news tonight - (ABC WA Sunday) A couple of thousand dead fish (mainly Perth herring) Sunday morning in the Swan between Caversham House and Sandalford winery (didn't go further up). River smelled pretty bad. Environment Minister Mark McGowan was busy - but maybe he'll find time...... TerryF ===== Beavering away in the background...... |
