Too clip or not to clip.
Should I buy fly clip's for my HB's? Or am I better off just fishing on a loop knot?

I use a loop knot for most of the time...Maybe use a snap clip if you are constantly changing your HB's, or you need a little extra weight or rattle to wake up the fish. Often helps you know.

I relegiously use mustad fly clips on my hardbodies. They are prone to rusting, so they only last one outing. They make the hassles of trying to tie loop knots non-existant. Their weight doesnt affect the balance and action of the lure, like other larger snaps/clips.

for my money it's crosslock snaps. they work for me and they close securely unlike fly clips

Speed Clips
If you change lures often these are great, Norman Speed Clips, almost weightless and replace the split ring on the tow point.

Loop Knot?
I stopped using loop knots when I had a succession of break offs which I believe was due to the sharp ends of the split rings cutting the leader.
Maybe teardrop split rings are the answer The Excalibur Tear Drop Split Ring is designed to enhance the performance of any bait, whether cast or trolled. Our unique design allows the angler to tie at either end of the ring without the line making contact with the split area and actually changes the behavior of the bait depending on which side of the ring the bait is attached. The narrow end keeps the bait in a tight wiggle and the wide end allows for a more wide wobbling action

Go the snap locks...
l use the smallest possible Berkley snap lock with all my hardback lures for the reasons Mark stated. Much safer and less time cosuming when using different lures at different depths , if moving around alot you can quickly change to suite your fishing.
They make no impact on lure action as l now use them on my baby vibes and they are way small.Make the change as the first big fish you lose, you will be kicking yourself. Cheers Steve |

I can probably count on one hand, the number of times I've used hardbodies, but when I do, I use the Norman clips pictured above. I'd really like to see the FLY CLIPS ppl keep mentioning tho, anyone got any pics

Where do you get these crosslock snaps, mate? Presumably a fly fishing store (Compleat maybe). Maybe I should just some mustad fly clips from Compleat.

Generally I tie a loop knot.... but if Im changing lures all the time I use a clip...without a split ring
I have used the Normans clips and found they can unclip them selves with a twisting, turning unhappy fish on the end....has happen to me three times.....lose the fish and the lure.. I have since moved onto the crosslocked yanky ones..... Also Mustard have brought out a oval split ring.....whats the go with these???? I brought some high quality Jap lures off the net and they came with oval split rings as well.....are they better ???? and why??

I managed 37 fish on Friday on the vibe, fished a completely locked drag, and I used 2 loop knots all day - one on the green vibe and one on the purple. I cant remember if Ive had a break off at the loop either.... not from memory though. I also cant remember going this hard on fish in Perth ever and the loops held up fine.
I can tie a loop knot pretty quick as well, so it really dosnt bother me to much...... I also think there will be times when having a snap on the front might be enough to put a fish off taking the lure. Not at the moment though. They are hungrey as. Got mates that use them no worries, but just not for me. I definitly dont think they are a neccessity thoguh. cheers
