Warning for Homemade lure test

Testing of Homemade lure shapes.

After reading a few of the posts on homemade lures such as Breamaddict and Dagga's, I decided to give a Bream size lure making a go. I have made large northern and saltwater chuckers in 180mm size for years.

Now with a couple of shapes drawn up and cut out on the bandsaw, shaped up with sanding and with a bit of marking pen lines to make it see able in water I went down to the Swan to give the lures a quick trial on swimming style action and depth.
These were fitted with a tail treble only and no paint at all apart from some marking pen lines as said before.

Well, second cast out from shore, what happens BUT a bloody hit from well what i said to myself was a bream. 1234 about 10 seconds later. Nothing but this small bit of stainless steel trace in a ring shape with a twisted end is on the end of the line.

What has been the lesson here. Allways use full wire as if it is a complete running lure that is to be completely finnished. Not a quick super glue fix a job to see what its like in a test job.

SO if Anyone that catches a Bream on the weekend around the Maylands area with a strange looking unfinnished lure in its gob or sees this bit of wood floating around in simmilar shape, its mine. Ha ha

yer i dont like the way i made my original lure but now i have the wire going straight through and wrapped around then epoxied into place so it makes for a much stronger finnish.

haha thats funny!

i once caught a nile tilapia on a piece of grass root - there was a flying ant hatch and i ran out of flying ants - found a grass root that was all twisted and looked kinda insect like stuck it on and whammo!! - 2kg's of angry tilapia!

just shows that if the fish are hungry enough they can eat anything that is thrown at them.!

Well crocstooth, what can you say: you live and learn. After seeing what toothy fish do to Rapalas, I ALWAYS through wire my lures, even when I use hard wood. I've been proven right several times.

Zimeric, you remind me of days gone by. In Kenya I specialised on targeting big Nilies on small SP grubs. Never saw them feeding on the surface though. Then again, the rain always messed up the water in the dams and streams I fished, so I never got on the water after the termite swarms.

For my bream lures i dont use through wires as I dont really see the point. I simply used 24 hours epoxy (the stronger one...dont use 5 minute stuff) and made sure the wire went in far enough to ensure it was not going to come out. Ive pulled harder on them than any fish ever will...and made sure i pulled with a jerk action...then twisted and all the variances i could think of that could happen in a fight...no movement or damage at all.

I would definately use through wires for any lure you intend to use for bg fish though...

I find it easier to make the wire go right through.

That's only one way the lure can come undone. If something toothy with powerful jaws takes a chomp, then a wooden lure will simply disintegrate. The through wire is to maintain a link to your hardware if the lure body is compromised.
