Reel dilemma - Luvias,Certate,Twinpower or Biomaster
After using lower end reels for all this time, I've just been given permission to upgrade and have a fixed amount to do it... Basically, with the money I have, I have the following options - I can get:
1 Certate or 1 Luvias and 1 Biomaster or 1 Twinpower and 1 Biomaster or 3 Biomasters The Certate will be a sweet reel to use, but its a toss up between value for money versus quality... I'll be using it mainly for breaming only so the sizes will be 1500 (or 2000) for Daiwa and 1000 (or 1500) for Shimano... I'll post a poll on this. Can you also state the reasons for your choice in case there are some factors I haven't considered... |

No one for Certate? Going once... going twice...

Id choose the Bios, simply because I like to have the same reel on all my rods, so it feels the same in your hand as soon as you pick it up.
Whether it be Certate, Luvias, Sustains etc Id prefer to have the same on them all. cheers

hi mate,
i actually own the certate, luvias and twinpower. A close fishing make owns the biomaster and the stradic. SO i tend to get to fish with all of them one time or another. It would really depend on if u would like one reel or two. If u basically only need one a certate is a fantastic reel which i have never regretted getting. They perform beautifully and u tend to fish with confidence. The crankjing is so smooth that it allows u to concentrate much better. Great value for money in my opinion. If you would like 2 reels, my suggestion is to invest in a little more and maybe get a luvias and a twinpower. I am basically a daiwa fan but my twinpower is one reel i can't fault. Landed fish from whiting to rat kings and jewies. A perfect reel if u like a little more speed in the cranking. The luvias is another reel which feels solid and has a beautiful drag. Swoffa might disagree but i love both the certate's and luvias' drag sound. Different kind of thrill. After fishing with the above 3 reels, and having a play with the stradic and biomaster, I find them a little different to use. They are both great reels but whenever i crank them, i just dun feel the gears are solid. The handles also tend not to be so well set up and unless u invest in a powerhandle, they feel a little wobbly at times. Never the less they have good cranking speed and have landed my mate many gd breams, bonitos and rat kings. Good stuff at a decent price. If u like u might consider an ulterga too. I have had one for 8 yrs and have worked well all this time with little maintainence. regards DArryl |

mate id get urself a luvias and a stradic, and then u could buy a sx with wats left over,i dont think the sustain is a 125 bucks better than a stradic and i think the luviass are just tops when it comes to spinning, anyway, what rods will they be matched to?i know the luvias would go on the loomis but what about the stradic if u got it?jmo.

What about two Luvia's?
Not sure hwere your getting them, but from my knowledge, your not far off having enough money for three!!! They are a sweet reel IMO. If not that, than 3 Bio's. As richo said, makes for similar feel on all rods/setups and therefore more confidence. Also allows oyu to change reels in comps (same rod) if you bust off. No tying new leader! Dave |

My shed resembles a fishing store, and i have most of the reels you mention.
I bought the custom certate because in the shop it was sweeeet. I should have got another three stradics to go with my others. After all the flogging they get, they are the only ones to maintain any sort of smoothness. And like richo and Dave P said having the same set ups on your rods makes for easy transitions. |

I own two Luvias' - a 1500 and a 2004, and two Certates, but in biggers sizes I use for bass and pelagics (3000 and 3500).
For $700 you should be able to get two Luvias' for sure. I haven't the need to go for the Certates for bream fishing as the two Luvias' have done me fine, and that includes some big Hawkesbury River Oyster Rack bream and also Glenbawn Dam Bass. Budda |

A tackle shop owner I know who sells quite a few Luvias and Certates as well as Shimano stuff tells me that many of the customers complain about the roller bearing on the Luvias having some problems after some use. Apparently it makes some noise after a while and no amoung of oiling or maintenance can fix that.
Would you prefer 2 Twinpowers over 2 Luvias or the other way around? I haven't given the 2 Luvias or 2 Twinpower option a thought yet... I've got 2 Loomises at the moment and considering getting a 3rd one. The ones I have at the moment is an SJR720 and SR842-2. I was looking at a different range of Loomises but because I absolutely love the SR842-2, I might either get an SR720-2 or SR782-2, as long as they're 2 piece.. This one is a different subject matter altogether |

Stradics 1000's are the go,
Mine has had A LOT of use, been dunked in the salt many times, I've never serviced it, only thing I've done is put a squirt of oil in the access port the other day. I wash it off about evry 3rd or 4th trip. I've had it for about 3 years. and it's still as smooth as the day I bought it.

Now, I'm really surprised at the results so far. Most people decided for 3 Biomasters instead of a Certate or Luvias/ Biomaster combo.. Before this poll I expected to see many more opting the Certate way but I guess most people think that a Certate is overkill for bream when a Stradic (or Biomaster) would do the job sufficiently....
Not too many fans of the Twinpower out there as well... given the twinpower is about $30 cheaper than the Luvias, why would you choose the Luvias over the twinpower? |

not sure of the specs on the twinpower...but the Luvias has that monster killer drag on it. It also looks and feels rather sexy.

How important is the weight to all of you? Out of the 4 reels, you might be surprised to know that the twinpower is the lightest at 195gm followed by Biomaster at 205gms and then the Luvias 215gms and then the Certates at 235gms. It probably won't feel all that different, 10-20 grams here and there, unlike the Laguna 2500 that I have (305gms), I definitely felt the difference from a Sahara 1000.

I'd say this need to upgrade is CONEHEAD's fault. He mentioned something to me which stuck in my head till now.. He said that my Loomis deserves a better reel on it than what's currently sitting on it... Could not get that out of my mind...
