Tierra 3000 slightly grinding

Just had my Tierra 3000 serviced by Daiwa before a trip where i used it once in saltwater and then a couple of times in a freshwater impoundment. I caught 2 x metre+ barra on it that made the reel go hard.

Is this enough wear to make the Tierra 3000 grind?

2 barra like that certainly are going to give it a good workout but with the drag working properly it shouldn't be a problem..congrats btw.
I'd be looking more at the service you had done,if when its pulled apart for the service and the gear was not put back in exactly the same position it can make them grind especially on a reeel that has had some use.
I pulled a reel apart a little while ago and before i could mark its position the gear fell out on the floor, when i put it back together it was grinding so i had to pull it apart 4 more times and move the gear around until it ran smooth.
you would think Daiwa might know this and i'd be sending it back.
cheers nereus

Where does it sound or feel like the grinding is coming from?

Bearings?
Spool?
Shaft?
Gears?

Obviously the grinding wasn't happening immediately after you got it back from the service or it would have been picked up prior to the couple of trips.

As people would know spraying a reel with inox after use is imperative. Small reels don't like big fish with the drag wound up like a rock. Not saying you did just pointing out for others what can happen when using small reels with big fish like a metre Barra. You can bend shafts and mash gears.

For some reason, in my brain I thought that if the 'pros' at Daiwa service it it would run smooth for a while with all the regular post use care. BUT I just got it back after them having it for 2 bloody months fixing it! I don't want them to take another 2 months and have it grinding when I get it back. Should I just take it to a local Experienced tackle store and see if they can get it going sweet?

I think it's the gears, not to sure about mechanics. It's just a slight grind, but being a finesse breamer you know how much the slightest grind can annoy the S**t out of yah.

Reel seemed fine after the service. Post fishing aftercare done. Drag was not to tight and the barra pulled heaps being 115 and 119cm, not that that would have an effect on the gears too much...Pump and wind, pump an wind would have.

Hey Pete,

I would say a couple of metre plus barra would put enormous strain on a reel, even if the drag was set properly. Spinning reels flex and twist when put under pressure and I would say that, since this is not a high end reel, (no offence meant here, just comparing it to something like a Stella or Daiwa equivalent) that this may have occured and either damaged the gears and/or put them out of alignment due to body flex....Just a thought.

Hey Phil, that's what I was thinking might be a possibility, cheers for your thoughts...

I plan to take this reel up North to Broome, Eco Beach and El Questro next year for my honeymoon. I do not want problems like this at my happy time, do you think an upgrade is needed for security??

I would maybe PM Richo about up north. I know he used a SOL heaps when pinning spangleds (He got some big ones too) and that was fishing 30lb and heaps of drag. I was using a bigger Capricorn with 20lb and that came back a little worse for wear (lost it's smoothness) after a couple of weeks of heavy fishing. Or if it is still working sweet, see if you can put up with it and thrash it some more!!!!

Cheers bro,

Phil

I'll grease it up and hopefully get it a bit more smooth...
I punish my 2000 Sol a little

How confident are you to service it yourself Pete, they're really not so difficult if you have the schematic diagram of parts and the way they go together, I'd be looking for worn gears or possibly bearings that have worn out.

It sounds like people are onto it. You can do a service yourself or have Daiwa service it 1200 Barra down to finesse breaming maybe a little noticeable.
Daiwa have the parts, particular lubes, specialist service people with the knowledge etc.

Buy Emo's Certate hyper custom they are geary but with a bit of hot sauce grease they are awsome, the gears are down sized saltiga gearing, Tierra's arn't really designed for punishment.. But i used to punish my 2000 sol as well, it eventually crapp'd out, hooking 30+kg eagle DohDohDohDoh will fork it....

...just a thought, but the first sign of grinding is usually the roller bearing that has sh@t itself? Not that?
