Redfin in dams best lures
I'm taking my young kids away next week and we are staying at a friends farm that has a dam full of redfin. Having never targeted them before, I'm after some advice on what hard bodies/plastics I should consider for the task. I'd rather fish with lures than bait so I'm only after info re relevant lures.
Cheers and over to you.................. |

I chased redfin a few times. They are aggressive feeders. They will hit almost any plastic. THe ones that have worked have been the Zman grubs, any kind of paddle tail, blades and hardbodies. Spinnerbaits and all that work too.
Bright reds, greens oranges seem to work well. |

Small grubs in bloodworm are my favourite lure. Slow retrieve with short twitches.

3.5cm blades ... Don't waste your money on expensive ones, most $2 blades work a treat

Thanks guys looking forward to the kids hopefully getting onto a few. They haven't quite got the bug yet but I continue to hold out hope.

Yeah I go with 2 inch paddle tails and single tail grubs - but the lakes I fish most often have alot of small fish and I dont like blanking
But there is a theory that says you should fish plastics too big to fit in a small reddies mouth if you want quality - especially at this time of year - coz those little reddies really fire up in the warmer months. |

Zman grubs in motor oil, slim swimz in greasy prawn and motor oil and 3.75ā€¯ streakz in pink all great options, as are blades as others have said.
I also find atomic 2.5ā€¯ paddle tails rigged weedless or hidden weight a highly effective lure across the flats where they can be worked on the top, slightly sub surface or allowed to sink before retrieving

I went down to a little lake this arvo but only pee-wees to be caught.
Had to drop down to a small paddle tail to hook them |

I fish for redfin weekly as my local lake is only 1km from me and full of reddies of various sizes. When they are going they will take anything including a jig head only. Other times they need some special attention and trying various lures.
To get the mid 40's and up sometimes you really need the right lure on the day. I have caught them on almost everything but here are a couple of favourites. Redfin are very aggressive and I have caught many that are the same size or smaller than the lure. -The old tassie devil cheap and still work, great for kids to learn. -Fish arrow j-shad and j-huddle plastics, expensive but the best for the XL models. 4 or 5in. -Zmans, grubs and slim swims -Bullet lures one of the best for casting at reddies, cast a mile and are a good price. Great for trout as well. -OSP bent minnows which are awesome for brown trout and reddies. -Daiwa Double Clutch which is by far the best lure I have used overall for a lot of species and still my go to 9/10. I have caught mulloway, mullet, bream, yellow bream, salmon, estuary perch, bass, cod, yellow belly, redfin, brown and rainbow trout. Probably some other species I forgot to mention. -Metal Vibes all types but I usually use TT's Don't be too worried about size of lure. Caught reddies smaller than lures I have used at times. |
