Rod Butt stinks - How can I get rid of Smell.

Accidentally Soaked my rod butt in what smells like raw sewerage - what should I use to get rid of the smell?

Long story.

Found a diy rod holder attached to a pier - It was made from an old silicone tube - Put my rod in it for about a minute.

When I pulled it back and continued fishing - thats when the waft of raw sewerage arrived

that wasnt unusual for the area I was in - they often put sewerage air vents around the joint to handle the high rise apartments in the area. And I figured a wind change was now blowing that straight up my nostrils

But this smell just kept intensifying - I was looking around thinking their is no way the local residents would put up with this smell. And the direction of the wind meant that stink would have to be coming from along way away if it was an air vent.

It didnt make sense

It did make sense minutes later, when I went to retie my lure and spit on the knot - the smell when my hand neared my face was like smelling salts

as I reeled back - I realized the smell was on me - both my hands and my jacket were infected. I smelt my rod and thats were the worst of it was coming from - thats when I put 2 and 2 together.

I went back to the rod holder and looked in it - the 40cm tube was half full with this brown funk which I assumed was a mix of rain water and some other foul smelling ingredient. Probably bait that had been fermenting for months but I swear someone had dropped a log in there aswell

I had just soaked my cork butt in that mix for a minute, then rubbed it over my clothes and hands.

I stopped the session immediately and made a dash for the nearest public toilet - once out of the wind, the severity of the problem became real - what smelt bad in a 15 knot breeze was almost unbearable in the windless environment of the toilet.

Of course the soap dispenser was busted - so I scrubbed everything as best I could but it made bugger all difference.

So it was off to the nearest supermarket for soap and garbage bags to at least contain the smell - that didnt do much good either.

My hands have stopped smelling and my clothes have been through the wash twice with fabric softener - so they're sweet.

But my fishing rod has been banished to the garage until I can find something to get the stink off it -

So long story short - what can I soak the butt in to get rid of the stink

Hehe - Trust me - I'm a tightarse -but I have considered that option

I'm hoping time in the garage might magically take the smell away but I thought I'd check with the brains trust to see if there is a way to speed things up

yeah that might have been an option if I hadnt already cut them down to the perfect length

Actually - I just went out to the garage and my hopes of the scent magically disappearing may have some merit.

While the stink is still there - it's fading. So all hope is not lost - I dont have eucalyptus oil or baking soda - but I will bring it in and give it another scrub with some pine-o-clean - and leave it out in the garage to dry

Everytime I net something that stinks - My net sleeps outside for a few nights and the smell goes away. So maybe a combinations of these treatments will save the rod

If your grips or butt are made from real cork just rinse it off.Cork is impervious to all liquids.

Yeah my grips are a diy mix of eva foam and champagne cork - and the stench was straight from Satans bung hole

I tried rinsing it off - then went to the shops bought some soap and hand scrubbed the hell out of the butt and that didnt work - scrubbed it again when I got home with a stiff brush - that worked a bit - then scrubbed it again a day later and that has worked a bit more.

I think the stench was hiding in the little creases holes and divots in the corks

Hence why I seal my Cork with Bondall Multi Surface Waterproofing solution...

Nothing gets in... And they still look great after seasons of use.
