Overhead Setup
Hi all,
I'm after a overhead reel and rod for mainly snapper and reef fishing off a boat and maybe some light jigging. Don't want anything to big and bulky, want it as low profile as possible but still heavy duty for big baits and fish. Was looking at the Shimano Tranx but not sure if it's built strong enough for these types of fishing. Another reel I was looking at was the Shimano Calcutta maybe the 400 size. Would love to hear what you guys recommend! I'd prefer Shimano being I live around the corner from their service department. Thank you all in advance... |

One of these. I'm planning to move on my TLD 15 for a Tekota 500A myself.
Has a line guide so a little more manageable for everyone involved.

Edit 18 June 2020 Brought one home for the night to quickly undress and have a look into. Not bad... Non disengaging level wind which isn't overly great, not even finger tight jesus nut on the handle, nice drag stack and gears. Otherwise I'll keep it... Just get all that pussy gunk out of it. Free up those idler gears to allow it to cast... Some comparison pics to TLD15 and Tranx 300...

I personally wouldn't go a jigging rod for bait fishing - especially if it is going in the holder. But I mean, it would do it. A GP overhead rod like Terez would be more suited to what you want to do, I think.
Don't discount Okuma Komodo's in the biggest size. They're bulletproof and straight workhorses! They look a bit average like me, but they do the job really well while being low-profile and compact. |

Ive got a 6'7 fibreglass blank about 34 years old in pristine condition - a little heavy but good for the use, I've bought 9 Fuji O Ring guides and tip, a Fuji HD winch seat + locking ring, a Fuji butt cap, BLA black / yellow and black / red 4mm nylon cord for the grips - going away from EVA / was going to go cork but that direction dried out...

Between Baby, boat and work not much time.
Will make a start soon though sick of seeing the bits float across my desk from one side to the other.
