I'd never heard of this Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) - thanks for the tip - I'll look into it

That Treble Pic is quite interesting. I was thinking off course the points would go first being the finest part of the hook. But whats interesting is that it isn't uniform in the corrosion pattern. Also did the top of the Eye corrode away as well? Plenty of corrosion where the the three hooks join up as well (this is pretty consistent with hooks that start to corrode in my tackle box) perhaps a different metal used to weld at the joint?
Slazmo, do you find the VCI more effective than dessicant pillows you find in various food packaging? I use the Dessicant as they are readily available and free, but unsure of their shelf life or whether they have one. Just assume that they continuously absorb ambient moisture and expel depending on ambient humidity.

The VCI just emits a corrosion inhibiting compound that slows corrosion to a minimum... So far its working pretty good - haven't really noticed any further corrosion to my hooks which have some pre existing corrosion pre VCI use! |

Cheers for the info Slazmo, might have to source some VCI

Should try your next test with a appropriate size split ring on the hook.
Also did you tie that up into the water fully submerged or allowed to air out during tide movement?? Also any large boats in the water near it? |

It was in the melbourne docklands - minimal current but it would have received some turbulent prop wash from the commercial vessel. |

You know how salt water holds a electrical charge + salt and other minerals which can act like abrasives. The copper in boat anti foules can corrode metals pretty quick, this galvanic reactions can accelerate corrosion in other metal structures nearby eg: other boats and their submerged structures.
Canals are really bad for it! https://www.google.com.au/search?q=c...h=681#imgdii=_ 20 days submerged is ages! Totally surprised that it lasted that long!!! |

Sorry to hijack your thread on corrosion protection guys , but I use the original Leatherman PST.
The file in it has two different grades: fine file on one side and a diamond coating on the other with the groove in it-perfect for filing hooks. Didn't feel that I need something else |

Thats a rippa - It gets the hooks out and keeps them sharp. Killing 2 birds with one stone is what I'm all about. |

Curious about the submersion test. Was it deep enough to be in the salt layer?
