Thanks fellas - I've got some more "experimental" stuff in pipeline that could go either way - But I'm going to give it a crack

That bulls testicles taste delicious?
Anyway, I've seen a lot of videos on tying the FG and this is the one I've settled on. All in Japanese but he demonstrates it very clearly. Pretty neat hey? No need to tie the line off anywhere. No finger cramps from keeping the line taut. No need for a knot tying tool. I do however add some half-hitches past the leader and finish on the main line. I find this prevents the main line from getting chafed by the cut end of the leader. Last edited by egithump; 05-06-2014 at 03:18 AM. |

"Gday Shaggers - Whats doin - Unfortunately this video is going to be a bit like pissing in the wind - I've just seen another method on youtube by this handsome Australian bloke and it blows my method out of the water. But I've gone to a bit of trouble editing it -so I may aswell post it up. After you've watched mine - Make sure you take a geez at the BFL method - its heaps good" |

P.s. on a slightly more serious note - I love those wraps he does at the start - they are very satisfying to do once you get a rhythm going.

not an fg one way of getting a tiny albright
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEYeUl5bBCA and a very quick fg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcjAfDB5Xio if it holds and goes through your guides really what is the diffrence ill admit fg is nice to do the day before a session get your rods all rigged with all new leaders but if you get busted off and you need to tie a new leader on would you rather spend 15 mins tying a knot or 3 mins and get back in there |

For me the fg knot is a hit and miss affair unfortunately.
I am struggling to keep the braid uniform when wrapping it over fluoro and compressing it once I've done my 20 turns . I know practice makes it perfect but it looks like I cannot get a knack of it. It is still early stages and I am giving it a few extra goes before I give up on an idea and revert back to a SB Making an fg using thicker fluoro is not a problem. It is a smaller leader sizes: 4-8 lbs that give me a grief. Asking the local FG knot gurus: What is an absolute minimum number of wraps that I can safely do on a 4lbs fluoro without a knot strength compromise? FYI, I call a wrap a full turn of both a standing and tag end of braid over a fluoro (10 wraps each = 20 wraps for both). This may help me to get it right. Cheers |

Forgot to ask: did anybody conduct an actual strength test to compare side by side an FG and other popular slim profile knots like a Slim Beauty, alberto, albright and a surgeon?
Not interested in a uni knot test as it is too bulky to use. Cheers |

Seems to be overly complex for mine - plenty of old knots do the job in light lines / leaders just as well and don't take half an hour to tie!
Each to their own though. cheers

i did some straight line pulls but i cant find where i put the picks of the scales. Those who say FG is a waste of time , or not worth it .. You need to beleive me when i say your wrong . The confidence you get out of knowing your knots are going to stand up to the LB rating on your leader 3 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 200lb has meant i can go really , really hard on bigger fish in tight structure on light lines .. No more nanna drags .. done properly FG lets me go harder on fish , like there was no connection point at all . like your able to do on straight through ..

I usually tie my first hitch (or half granny, which is what I actually use) then tighten the wraps by pulling that down onto them. I never bother to compresse it first before tying the hitches. Works fine it the lighter stuff.

Thanks Toby
This is the feedback and encouragement I need to persevere with the fg I don't mind if it takes a bit longer than tying a SB - worthwhile the effort. When I manually tested my first properly tied fg it was miles better and stronger than any other knot. I have no doubts this knot is better than any other. Just need to master it. Cheers |
