Cleaning Rod Butts

Hi
I was just wondering if anyone knows a good way to clean cork rod butts. I have tried to clean my rod butt with soap and water but it didn't work and the cork still has dirt stuck in all the cracks.

After you sand it down you can rub it over with candle wax to stop it getting dirty again. Personally I wouldn't bother with either the sand paper or wax, dirty cork works just fine for me.

my rod builder has previously told me that the best way to clean cork is to rub it with metho. then wax it and it should stay clean for a couple of months, then repeat the process.

Hi,
All the listed methods will work when cleaning cork but go easy with the metho if you go that route. Thorough scrubbing with soapy water is my choice but sometimes they need a little more ie. fine sanding or metho. Applying some wax after you've cleaned them is highly recommended. Don't bother with candle wax or hard blocks of bees wax though. Spotlight and some other craft shops sell an Australian product called Busy Bee Beeswax. It's quite soft and easy to apply but dries to a hard glossy finish that you can buff down. You can reapply some a couple of times a year. It might sound like a bit of work but you're obviously keen to look after your gear. Seeing the grips on some of Bushy's custom rods in the bream bible gives me the heebie geebies
Cheers,
Rigzz

was just wondering what the wax fells like on your hands, does it make the butt slipery and does it come off onto your hands?

Hi Daniel,
I was initially a bit concerned about that but the answer is no. If you buff off the excess then you won't feel anything really. It hardens to a quite tough finish although you might notice a 'waxy' smell about the rod the first time you use it. (Might need to be careful not to transfer this smell to your lures on the first trip or two). It's also quite resistant to heat which surprised me. We've had a Perth style stinking hot summer in Sydney this year and I've never been aware of the wax on any of my rods. Use with confidence.
Cheers,
Rigzz

Has anyone tried using Dubbon (not sure of spelling)? I used to use it on my work boots to seal them against water. It was a waxy sort of stuff that you rubbed in and then buffed off after it soaked in.
