Bye Bye My Lure
Since i downsized my tackle to fish for bream, flatty, snapper.
every time I join leader to main (braid),i can always hear my Knots hitting the guild then eventually gives up and bye bye my Lure. i have tried number of different brand, leaders material and mono and still getting the knot pinged on casting (using 8-10lb leader) i can get away with snapping if i cast softly, but still hear/feel the knot hitting. my knot is 5-6 twist double uni knot, do you think this is making the knot too thick, i have switched rods, and style of casting but same problem. so now i am never confident when casting, i don't get the distance and been fishing paranoid waiting for my line to snap crackle pop. could this be issue with main line? i used 6lb Fire line and 8lb Nanofil. or is my lure just too heavy? (max i use 10g metal) is it because i am casting like a retard or too hard. any info/feed back would be really appreciated My Lure cost is going bonkas~ at the moment. |

Try a slim beauty knot. For heavier leaders give the Fg knot a go. |

Swap to an albright knot, a slim beauty or an FG knot and they wont bang through the guides cast further and have a higher knot strenght as well.

i have also been finding this same thing, until i changed to microguides everything was ok, but as soon as i started using the microguided rods the knots would hit the guides..
one thing i have noticed, if you have the knot between the spool and the first guide, it doesnt hit most of the time, as soon as the knot is in the spool and i cast it hits.. this only happens on the wicked weasel rod, when i use the itchy twitchy with smaller leader (4lb) even a double uni knot doesnt hit loll.... |

There is usually a lot of casts before the good old uni knot lets go, and smashing any knot through the guides at cast speed is going to take its toll eventually. Better off just coming to the realisation that no knot is indestructible. Get into the habit of testing the knot after every decent fish and or every 20 to 30 minutes. Not a little sissy tug and yep shell be right! Give it a test. Pull it like you really want to keep that lure or not lose that next monster fish. Knots are a fact of life when fishing. Easier to get used to it and retie often and ensure anything you hook stays hooked.

I use a 4 turn Surgeon's knot with success. The knot only seems to catch once and awhile in my recoil stripper guide but all other sic guides work fine. I found that it pays to have the knot off of the spool as well. Perhaps reduce the length of your leader a little. It can also be about the 'finnese' of tying the knot as well. Good luck. So much information and experience to work with. Regards, HBt.

Alberto knot is what I have settled on over numerous knots. I always half hitch each end of the knot as well. Protects the knot from the guides as it travels through I think.

What he said.
And use better line and practice the knot know exactly how to tie it right and what it looks like when it's tied right. If you feel you haven't tied a knot spot on test it and re tie it. But a double uni tied well shouldn't be letting go like you've experienced so I reckon it's probably your mainline too. Double uni's definitely aren't one of the better leader knots, they're too bulky and are weaker than an improved slim beauty, great beginners knot though because its easy to tie. |

Another plus for the improved alberto. I have tried many different knots but in my opinion in lines under 20LB this is about as good as it gets.
