How do you measure your fish?

What is the 'right' way to measure fish?

I wanted to gauge the crowd on whether they spread the tail of fish fully when measuring or arrange it in a way to give maximum length. Further to that, is there a correct way to do it?

The picture is what I'd call 'spread'

We measure the same way as the photo as in a natural position. We have seen some who seem desperate to beat a mate by flattening out the tail simply belittling themselves in the process. Can not be done on fish with convex tails like Jew or fish like Flathead. Interestingly i believe that if your fish measures in any way fisheries will accept this as it's legal length.

I don't fish comps, so all my measurements are just for my personal diary.
I measure fish to the fork. That way there's no margin for error.

I measured everything to the fork while I was doing comps.

Now mainly fishing freshwater everything is measured as to long as it will go.

In Victoria -"to the fork" measurements are only used by a handful of elite sportsmen making millions on the pro bream circuit - it was introduced so every bream brought to weigh in, would be guaranteed to be legal because "to the fork" is not a true measurement of a fishes length - it makes the fish appear shorter than they actually are.

Everyone else measures the correct way, as outlined by the people who will fine you for undersized fish

Rather interesting to see the DEPI video indicating to measure at the maximum available length, though I guess they'd have to expect that every second fisho would try it that way and put up an argument if fined
