I tried the ancient ways and they were good - But I thought it could be improved upon

I swapped grooves cut in the side, for holes drilled down the middle. I used a 6mm drill bit and the galvanized steel rod was 6.3mm. So I had to hammer them into place. Saying its a firm fit, would be an understatement
Hose clamps were chosen, instead of string. They were placed at the tip and the bottom of the holes drilled. I decided to go with hose clamps for 2 reasons Number one -they're "hella" strong Number two - they take seconds to install, instead of minutes. I'll give them a coat of inox before each use and hose the salt off when I get home. If they rust out in a few years - I'll just buy new ones Even without the tips sharpened, it is a serious weapon - the rods are galvanized all the way through so rust wont be a major factor. (I'm not saying it wont be a factor - but it will last a fair few sessions) 1.3kg doesnt sound heavy - but it is for a hand spear. Its like a crow-bar with spikes. I was stabbing it very hard into concrete while trying to break it - it wont break or bend. So a flounder, lying on sand, shouldnt be a problem. Its probably a bit long at the moment - but I figured "too long" is better than "too short" at this stage of its development. I'll pack a hand saw next session for on the beach adjustments I've upgraded its ability to take care of bears to a "Rhino Slayer" Last edited by yellow door 1; 29-01-2016 at 09:45 AM. |

Had to wait till morning to sharpen the tips but they're done.
And I cant find my 15mm butt caps at the moment - but you get the idea of the protective sheath so no one gets stabbed unintentionally Last edited by yellow door 1; 29-01-2016 at 07:21 PM. |

I reckon PVC pipe is on par with the likes of duct tape and WD 40 in regards to how essential it is to have at hand. There's just so many things it comes in handy for.

Took her out for a test run and realized there was a fairly major over sight in the design.
You've got to be about calf deep before the camera even goes under water |

The guy at Bunnings tested the bolts with the mount so they were the right diameter
And now the camera be under the water at ankle deep - (often required for flounder) - its still a bit higher than I'd like but I still want the camera above the lights I'll get a better pic when the glue dries Last edited by yellow door 1; 06-02-2016 at 08:14 PM. |
