not so secret....
Inspired by the recent watching of countless videos of the megabass pro staff chasing bass among the weeds and ponds I decided to have a crack at some bass at a "top secret" location not far from where I live. Having only been there once before I knew that its almost impossible to fish from the bank at this spot, but I threw caution to the wind and went anyway, following yellowdoor's advice to just wade out through the reeds. It was a warm, overcast day and had been raining earlier this week so I figured it would be perfect conditions for bass hunting. After a short drive and about 1/2 an hour of bush bashing I found the little dam, hidden away in the middle of the bush. I walked around looking for the best possible spot to make a cast from, and settled on a location that looked like less trouble than anywhere else. I could hear and see bass smashing the surface, a lot of them among the lily pads and so I kicked my shoes off and took a step into the water. The first step resulted in my foot plunging about a foot deep into rotten vegetation. The second step saw the water up to my waist, and filthy muck all the way to the plums. NOPE. I did manage to clamber onto some nearby submerged timber however, and got a few casts in to no avail. After about 20 minutes, and much to my surprise, a younger gentleman turned up with his mum and started flicking topwaters not far from me. Turns out the top secret dam isn't so top secret after all... Anyway, after a quick chat I went to look for another viable spot and came across a tree that had fallen in, extending out through the lilies and rushes, that had what was left of a platform sitting at the end of it and so I made my way out onto it for a few more casts. This time I did manage a single strike on a popper, but unfortunately that was all she wrote. Not so much as a look in after that. What I did learn however, is that waders are a luxury item, and that next time I go I will be taking an 8ft 25lb flipping rod with 20lb braid and I will most certainly be throwing weedless frogs among those lilies.

Whoops - Yeah its much more fun wading on a sandy bottom than a silt pond
But when its silty, I don't wade around the edges - I just pick strategic entry points dotted around the lake - then walk out through the reeds like a duck. This splayed walking technique maximizes the vertical reed stems crushed under each foot and can stop you sinking so deep into the mud. That joint looks like it may require some sort of flotation device - or just wear a wet-suit Last edited by yellow door 1; 25-03-2016 at 05:32 AM. |

I'm going to see if I can't knock up a few platforms out of the surrounding junk dotted around the place. The dam is in a reserve that full of 4wd tracks and unfortunately people just dump their crap everywhere in the surrounding scrub. Plenty of barrels and pallets lying around, though so I'm thinking maybe a pontoon? I'm also thinking a set of chest high waders may be in order.

BTW that last pic is, for all intents and purposes, a pontoon. It's just a piece of all but de-laminated) ply sitting on to of a few bits of 2x4 and branches that are afloat on top of the vegetation.
