Larger reel for throwing stickbaits offshore
Hey all,
I've been chasing kings in my kayak over the last few months and have received a new rod just recently that i need a new reel for. It's a heavier rod so I'm looking at a larger reel (compared to my Daiwa 2000/2500s). Does anyone have experience with the Daiwa Certate HD (current model), Daiwa Catalina (current model), or Shimano Twinpower SW? I haven't owned a Shimano since the Stradic FI first came out but i am tempted by the TP SW. Anyone got feedback to share on these reels? |

If I were you I'd look for a 2012 Isla/Catalina on clearout, they are around $500 for the 5000 size. Second to that I'd look at a Saragosa.

Cheers bud. I just read a bunch of stuff on the Alan Hawk site which mirrors pretty much all that you've said. Will definitely keep an eye out for the Catalina

Out of curiosity, what rod have you got?

Samurai Kestrel 25-40lb. I actually won it last week. It's certainly a heavy rod, especially for yak fishing, but it's quite light in hand. In feels lighter than my 20lb Megabass Racing Condition. Will probably use it for livebaiting also

Haha! funny story, I won the exact same rod this time in 2015. They're a nice rod, load up really well and are comfortable to fight fish on. A 4500-5000 Daiwa would suit it really well.

I actually ran a 4k Stella on mine which worked fine, but it wasn't quite balanced right and looked a tad awkward. You'd probably be right with a 4k Daiwa, however.

Sweet, thanks man. I'm thinking a 4k Certate HD or Catalina, but tackle warehouse has 25% off all reels tomorrow so I've now started looking into Saltigas

If you're going the route of a saltiga, get the expo 5500. I'll just leave this here....

Haha! Mate, I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the new year!
The way I see it, there's no real advantage in getting the base Saltiga over the Catalina, they're 99% the same reel so you may as well save some coin and get the Catalina. The expo has an over-sized spool and a radiation drag knob that actually does a really good job of sinking heat from your drag, genuinely offering better performance than the other Saltigas. It's also the sexiest reel out, and a bargain at a sale price of $860

*Alan Hawk is adamant that the gears are in fact cast zinc alloy and not actually aluminium as advertised so take that as you will.

I got a Stella SW5000 on my Kestrel 10-20lb.
So a bit heavier rod, try a abit heavier reel. Maybe Saragosa 6000? its cheap too. |
