Combo recommendations please

Hi all,

Just getting started and wanting to buy a new setup for bream, flattys and whiting etc..

I am thinking for reel either the stradic ci4+ 2500 or the rarenium ci4+ 2500. Would love fj stradic but seems most stores are out of these now.

Now for rod is where I am kind of stuck - I love the look of the N.S blackhole ones 702l or 702ul which can be bought for around $200 online and bonus hard rod tube.

Other than this I'd love some suggestions for other rods in that price range. And 2 piece is kind of a must.

Any advice much appreciated.

Won't go wrong with either reel. If you can try both on some rods at your local store and see what you like the feel of so you can compare to others. Also work out the type of fishing ie. boat, bank, flats etc to narrow down the field. In general a 7 foot 2-4 kg will be a good all rounder and starting point

I love my Rarenium ci4+ i also have a stratic ci4 and have used a new FJ.

I wouldn't swap the Rarenium for any of them, super light super smooth and an amazing drag, if weight wasn't an issue i would maybe go an FJ as they are great for the price at the moment.

can't comment on rods in that price range sorry, i have mine on a Diawa Bream Tournament specialist and it balances perfectly with the 2500 size.

Wow expensive rod fair way out of my league I think.

Anyone else know some decent rods around the $200 ish mark? ?

The ns blackhole rods are great I think you are onto the best value rod for what you get, they are very well finished with great components.

The UL 1-3kg one in my local shop is a very soft tapered rod I'd go the 2-4kg if you are gonna chase a bit of everything that may get you into a bigger fish!
Good luck mate

Awesome advice man cheers for that I was thinking that the 2 - 4kg may balance a bit better with a 2500 reel as well.

Strange MO's says those two blackhole rod models don't come with the rod tube but everywhere else says they do..

Have a look at a few of the samaki range around that price. Just be careful if you do or don't want micro guides

Hey Ben,

Any reason for requesting 2500 and not a 1000 with those species in mind?

I am not trying to dissuade you here so please don't take it the wrong way,
A 1000 is more than capable of handling bream, flatties and whiting & with my 1000's I never find line capacity or drag an issue, even with some pretty decent mulloway I pull on the regular out of snags. If you plan to take it a bit more off shore or target fish larger/beyond that which you have listed then I would straight shoot for the 2500 however, because I mainly use my 1000s in shore, they are best and offer best ergonomics over long periods of time (I will sometimes do a 5-6am to 5-6pm).

I really couldn't imagine throwing a 2500 all day & that is said after using a 1000 sustain ci4 design all day regularly... but It could just be me & my preference as i'm sure many people could say they fling them around all day!

Do you want a plastics rod? Hard body rod? All rounder? As above, consider areas you want to fish. Heavy timbered/structured area's I run 6 - 6"6 2-5kg rods and where flats are considered, anything to 6"6 - 7"2 ~3kg rod or even ~4kg.

I love my N.S as well & I've used them happily for a while now. I've got 4x N.S Avengers which frequent as my snag rods and the taifun which is my flats rod, while the taifun will be well out of your budget the avengers are pretty competitive to your price depending on where you buy.. I've thrown my mates one's a number of times and didn't feel it was for me, so I advise to try and play with one before you buy! P.S I've never received a tube on all of my 2 pieces, only a sleeve.. So maybe a tube is a store thing that only some people do.

I would probably pick up a 1000 stradic fj (there are still a few about) and a
cheap rod until you work out exactly what you want out of a rod. But you might know already. I'm pretty new to fishing and started out on a stradic 1000FJ a couple of years ago (after dabbling with a sienna) with a pfleuger trion 2-4kg and a trion in 1-3kg, which you can now pick up for about $69 which really is a bargain. I found that the 2-4kg was pretty good for targeting flathead using soft plastics as well as whiting using poppers weighing about 5grams. It was a great combo and the stradic 1000fj is still going strong on my new rod.

Cheers mate you've definitely given me something to think about. I wasn't set on the 2500 or anything just kind of assumed it'd be the right fit for those size rods but the 1000 is definitely an option. Just found a thread on here from 2012 and most people seemed to match a 2500 to the pfleuger trion 2-4kg but the odd one had 1000.

Definitely hard body rod, not really into plastics and never have been but not to say I wouldnt at some point give it a go. But at this stage definitely hard bodies all the way.

I think the hard cases for the Black Hole rods are a special thing with the 'ones' models as it seems to be common inclusion on most online stores.

I have never fished with 1000 sized reels, tey felt too small in my hand. I fish with 2500 sized reels. I don't understand how people say they are too big too cast all day. I have casted all day for 5 days straight and still not have any issues with a 2500 sized reel. Saturday I fished with a 10ft rod with a 4000 sized reel for more than 5 hours casting plastics and slugs and never got tired or sore from it.

In my opinion 2500 gives you a bit more flexibility.
