What 4000 or 5000 reel?

G'day Peeps,

Looking to get a new 4000 or 5000 reel to match to my Nitro Innovator Synper 10 foot rod. Choices I have come up with are Daiwa Caldia Kix Custom 4000, Daiwa Sol 4000 or the new Shimano Rarenium ci4 5000. They are all around the $350 mark which is all I am lookin to spend, although the Shimano Twin Power at around $450 is a maybe too if the extra coin can be justified. Looking to catch anything from Tailor from rock groynes to Mullies off the beaches. What are your thoughts?

Also what 15-20 pound braid would you guys suggest? Hopefully something that comes in 200m or more rolls to be able to pull in Mullies from places in and around the Swan River now that mullie season is approaching.

The sniper is a very light rod (3-6kg if i am correct). Personally i would put a 3000 size reel on the rod. A stradic 3000 would match up perfectly on the sniper in terms of balance and weight.

Maybe consider a spheros or saragosa(think that s it) if you think you will be doing a lot of surf work. They are not as fancy as the other reels but more durable for the sort of work you will be doing.

I have a 3000 reel currently on it. And although the rod is a light rod it has a lot of backbone to it for such a light rod. Hence looking at the size up for a little more versatility. The reason I say 4000 or 5000 is more due to the Daiwa 4000 reels being a little larger than the 4000 Shimanos. So to be more specific a 4000 daiwa or a 5000 shimano.

As it is only a 10 foot rod not really planning on too much surf fishing, just river beach fishing which has no surf.

Thankyou for the suggestions though.

A 3000 size reel is perfect for that rod!! The rod is 3-6kg, and you'll never put more than 6kg of drag through it so why go for a larger reel?

E.g. I have an airity 2500 which can produce 7kg of drag yet i have it on a 1-3kg rod and use 4lb line. This is just showing you that no matter how much drag your reel has, your never going to put more drag than the rod is rated for. And if line capacity is your issue, you sould fit a whole 300m of 15-20lb braid on a 3000 size reel which is plenty for the type of fishing you are looking at doing. Finally, a lighter, smaller reel means you'll be able to cast more comfortabley all day. I hope this helps

Cheers Matt

I would try to get the lightest reel I could afford. If it comes down to capacity on the reel you may have to look at some of the thinner PE braids in 200m spools as I imagine it would be pretty easy to knock off 80m casts with that rod and the right reel ... doesn't leave much left when a big Jew decides it wants to play!!!! I'd go a Luvias 3000 which will hold 250m of PE 2 probably Saltiga surf casting braid would be good. Light as a feather and perfect for the job in hand. If I had to go a 4000 or 5000 size reel I'd save my coin for a Stella purely for the weight factor!!

Went to look at the twinpower 3000, 4000 and 5000 reel. Nice and lite. Had it on a Nitro Snyper and the 3000 was way too small. The 4000 was sweet, but the 5000 holds about 250-290 metres of pe2 braid and has extra drag on it if i want to put it on something a bit more hardcore down the track . But seriously considering the rarenium ci4 5000 which is 300g approx and at US$300 looks good value. Was gonna get the 4000 sol but there is a back order till mid December. Can't wait that long.

Hi Rodney,

I have this exact rod and use it in the same fashion you are looking at and also in light surf conditions. Its an awsome stick I must say, absolutey love it !!! Nice and light with fast taper and plenty of grunt in the butt section. I have matched mine up with a Diawa D-Redback 4000 and is a well balanced outfit with this reel. Any of the 4000 size Daiwa reels are a perfect size reel for this rod IMO. The Redback also looks sweet on it in terms of the colour, black body with red highlights
