Consistency - is there such a thing?
Kind of impossible question but I’ll ask it anyways ….
What sort of expectation should I have of bream catch rates? So far I’m regularly fishing docklands for 40ish min sessions 3 or so times a week. I reckon I’ve had maybe 20 sessions for 3 landed, 2 hooked but dropped. Usually fish early morning (pre-work) and all sorts of tides. Still trying to get my first 2014 bream and yesterday and this morning sessions coincided with high-tide/incoming tide but no touches (I think). The area I fish has plenty of structure so I assume the fish are there, but because I am so inexperienced I sometimes wonder if I actually know what I’m doing. I could handle a donut through doing everything right but knowing the fish aren’t hitting the lure …. But I struggle with the self-doubt that it is my technique.. basically I have no idea if it is me or the bream that isn’t playing the game properly So far when I have caught a fish it seems to be just a one-off for the session. My mate reckons I only catch the retarded breams. As a schooling fish I have (perhaps wrongly) assumed once you find them you should be able to pull multiple fish… which makes me think my technique sucks … and with less than 20hrs under my belt I'm fairly sure its on the sucking-hard end of the scale. I know they can be a fussy target but wondering if I should keep persisting doing the same thing or should I play with my technique/presentation. At the moment 90% of the time I am tea-bagging micro-vibes down the pontoon pylons on straight-thru 5lb fc. I let it flutter down the side of the pylon on a free-spool and if it hits bottom I give it a few slow-lifts (30-50cm) and pauses before just winding it up. I reckon the vibe is on/near the bottom for a max of a couple of mins before I wind in. I give each pylon 2-3 goes before moving on. Tea-bagging with no touches isn't the most exciting way to fish and I have to admit I'm getting a little dis-heartened. I’m considering soft-plastics - trying texas-rigged eyeball tails and bottom bumping it or trying grubs on a jighead … but really have no idea if that would increase or decrease my chances haha… Would love to try and get a bit more certainty and consistency into my fishing but not sure how to go about it. I expect I need more patience but sometimes I want to pull my freakin’ hair out |

He mate, I have shared your frustration about that place many times. There will be some tips that I or one of the other docks tragics can give to you but those tips are best passed on one on one.
I am crazy busy at the moment moving house but if you let me know what times you are heading down I will see if I can join you for an hour or so and pass on some of what I have learnt over the years.

Bream sure do seem to have that effect on a bloke
It's all about confidence...Having confidence in what you are doing is a very important and vital key to success. Once you loose that confidence then the fishing starts to go down hill. Maybe try throwing sinking stickbaits and hopping plastics, or possibly try a different type of vibe...Once the bream have seen something a million times, they become pretty clued on. So mix it up a bit...For example one day throw vibes...The next day throw plastics...Then the next throw something slightly different like a sinking stickbait. Slow down the retrieve right up. The bream are there, it's trying to get them to bite is the hard part...It sounds like you are spending a bit of time on the water, so that is a good thing mate. With persistence you will be rewarded... If other folks are fishing the same area and are having success, watch them closely and see what type of retrieve or what not, that they are doing. Sometimes it only takes something small to change the game around into your favour. Another tip is try to hook a session up with another angler that seems to do well in your area...Fishing with more experienced people helps to broaden your skills and it's amazing what you can learn from fishing with other people. Good luck mate, hopefully the tide turns for you so to speak and the fish start coming your way

BAAHAHAHAHA! Sharp alex!
Sloth, theres some great advice so far and a very generous offer from a couple of guys with a wealth of experience. Its easy for people here to wheel out the same old generic "persistence pays off - stick at it" lines. But its great to see some serious anglers offer their genuine specific advice as well as offer up their time. Sexton and BWJ top notch!! Unfortunately im on the same losing team as you sloth, a dozen or so trips to the docks for naught! Ill def be keeping an eye on this thread! This is the heart of BM. |

I certainly don't have the same level of experience as the previous posters but I figured sharing my story may be a little bit comforting at least.
I'm still fresh to chasing bream on lures and started out using plastics (familiar with them after chasing flatties) and vibes. The going was incredibly slow and for whatever reason I decided to buy a yak (I suppose I was still having too much fun). Still using plastics and vibes the consistency was undesirable so I decided to trek it out and see Adam at fishin.com.au as I figured I can simply play the fool. He put me on a completely different direction (put me onto the jackall chubbies and a few other things) and I'm now fishing far more consistently (10+ fish a session). So what I suppose I'm saying is trying something different isn't such a bad thing. |

In the meantime .... I'll give something other than a micro-vibe a run. I have previously tried an austackle shinku and a pontoon21 crackjack deep along the edge of pontoons but nothing. Generally though I don't give them enough time and always revert back to the micro-vibe that I've caught bream on ... kind of creates a self-fulfilling prophecy though. I think next session I'll only take soft plastics with me which will force me to use them.
This might be a stupid question but I always think of plastic fishing as bottom fishing i.e. let it sink and then work it on the bottom with hops and pauses.... but I know sometimes the bream take a vibe on the drop ... are there always bream hanging around the bottom or do they school at different levels ? Do I just fish the plastic on the bottom or do I try to work the plastic at different levels i.e. a slow roll before it hits the bottom? .... hahah confusing myself now I have berkley power grubs, 80mm squidgie wrigglers, madeye crabs, and some eyeball tails (and a bunch of other stuff but I'll stick to the above for simplicity). I also have 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 jigheads and some worm hooks ...... What should I try? Texas rigged eyeball tails and bottom bash it or just fish the wrigglers and squidgies as I would a vibe (dropped down the pylons)? I assume the same rules apply as well and stick close to the structure? |

Haha our combined knowledge will only be worth 10min of tuition.

Would you consider a teams event?
Sloth under the wing of BWJ, an o.g docks shuffler so ive read (not exactly sure what that means but it sounds authentic and probably invloves velour slippers, a corn-cob pipe and your best impersonation of a crab) and myself under the strict tutelage of piscateur. Some friendly competition that could provide decent days fishing and probably an interesting read? |

It takes time patient and some gray hairs to consistently catch bream but you got to have confidence in yourself and the gear lures and so on.the more your on the water the better you get with the feel of the water tides wind and there is a pattern you start to see.the other thing I do is play some motivation music like Witney Huston lost in your eyes and ACDC he'll ain't bad to be.thats I feel some days when I'm fishing for bream.

Thats not one thing I've tried. Sounds interesting. A few questions on technique though: Is it always Whitney and ACDC or are bream motivated by other artists ? Do you play the music to the bream via an underwater speaker or are you just playing it directly off the pontoon? And lastly, do you do any pauses between tracks and if so how long should I pause for? Thanks |
