pb barra

hi all
this weekend gone, i got a pass to go barra fishing with a mate who flew up from adelaide. (who says married blokes cant go fishing on valentines day)

We had a short trip planned to monduran , leaving early saturday morning, and returning monday. Friday night saw one too many drinks and we ended up leaving a bit later than planned. Got to monduran some hours later, step out the air conned car and started to leak fluids at a rapid rate. We pitched up the tent and prepared the gear. there was a comp on that weekend as well. Some old geezer in the camp next to us, showed us his freshy caught barra of about 75-80cm. that gave me the energy to brave the heat and humidity.

it was our first time at monduran, but i had a few ideas from forums and speaking to people where to go. We launched the boat and off we went. First spot was one that i thought looked good, , 20 minutes later my lure stops dead in its tracks and there is this massiv boil, then this beast takes off. it peels drag like no tommorrow and after an awesome fight with many runs, we get her to the boat. my landing net was a tad small for the occasion but we managed to shovel the barra in.

she measured 97cm, was fat as. Even though she was out of the water a while, she swam off really quickly.

we were now fired up, first barra after 20 minutes, couldnt even feel the heat anymore. started fishing again, alas nothing elese happened that day.

that evening, heard that the comp guys were not doing too well with a few donuts happening. alot of floating weed and blue green algae being the reasons as well as the dam having come up 3-4 metres in the last few weeks and was still rising.

Next day headed up the dam and the floating weeds and grass and algae was pretty bad, so we turned around. almost 9 hours of sun filled soul destroying casting, for 2 bites (one at 9am to other at 4pm) , the first bite snapped my leader at the boat (was same size as previous day) and another that ripped the rod from my mates hand. luckily the rod was retreived but the line has snapped.

that was it, i was happy to avoid the donut, my mate left sunburnt and not amused. next time i go up, i will try and time it for more stable water levels. heard that the comp hs 40 teams and 8 barra landed.

Nice one Rob. Good to see some payoff for a lot of casting and braving the heat.

Cheers, Dror

Nice fish. Certainly sounds like hard work.

Personally Ive never seen the appeal of fishing the impoundments, anywhere else getting one fish in a day would be a complete disaster let alone one fish in a whole weekend.

I suppose its the lure of a 1m+ barra.

Great work mate! Hopefully this time next year Ill be posting a photo up of some beasts as well

Meh,
I think you hit the nail on the head. Big deal if its an impoundment, the fact is, a meter fish is a meter fish. Especially if its your first for that species. I personally wouldnt give a crap if my first barra was from an impoundment if it was a meter long, it would still be an absolutely awesome fight!

Once again good work mate!
