FG Knot
I've just had a go at tying a FG knot and I must say I am impressed.
I tried 8lb sunline super to 8lb fc rock and every attempt held firm. I've heard it doesn't like being tied in light leaders. So can you tell me how light a leader it can be safely used.

Light leaders
Hey mate, I've only recently discovered the knot as well but have tied it with some lighter leaders and light mainlines. I've tied 2lb crystal to a 3lb leader without a problem. The thing to be careful of is when tying the half hitches don't pull the half hitch tight and then drag down the mainline or the leader to the butt of the knot. Try and keep the half hitch loop open as long as possible and tighten it already butted up against the wraps or the last half hitch. I think its the friction between the lines that cause the lighter lines to pop. Took me 3 goes at working this out with the 2lb crystal but i gave the knot a good working over before tying real leaders that i planned to fish. Seems a great knot and I can't see where it wouldn't be the best line joiner to use.

Takes so long!
Don't understand why you would use an FG knot on light leaders....it's not Going to be any stronger than a 5 turn surgeons or a slim beauty. |

3lb fluro is the lightest I've gone. It is fiddly bit the end result is the slimmest knot there is.
50 meter casts with a 7ft rod easily achievable. Just go slow with the hitches so you don't add friction heat into the line. Just as hazardous to the braid as with the leader.

2lb crystal with a 3lb leader leaves a very slim knot anyway, even when tied with an improoved albright. The FG is a friction knot and the twists/turns never bite into fluro as well as they do normal mono. Thats another point to consider. I love the FG in heavy applications. I want to give the FG a go because last trip using a longish leader I had the braid wrap around my guides a couple of times. K guides too and I really wanted a long leader that day.
I was hoping the FG might eliminate this problem. For 6lb and lighter I can't see much point and I'll be sticking with the slim beauty. I just wondered how light some guys would go.

I go down as slow as 12lb for bass and breaming. I did have some issues with it on lighter lines. I think the issue was not enough tension and the braid couldn't bite into the leader. But saying that, its a bit of a pain trying to tie it on light lines...

I dont see the point in using an FG in such low lb ranges, an improved albright connection with lines lower than 10lb and a well trimmed tag has move than enough slimline capabilities even for rods with micro guides |

And no, not with 10 Halco's. 1/4oz tt jig heads.

With practice the knot can be quick and easy. I'm happy tying it and its especially good when using micro guides and heavier leaders. What ever floats your boat i guess...

4lb fluoro to 4lb platypus super braid is the smallest I have gone. A bit tricky with the leader, but once you get the hang of rolling the leader through with your pinching hand it becomes easier as your fingers move along the knot like a caterpillar. Cheers Gav

The FG is so much slimmer which is the main reason a lot of bream guys are using in UL gear, not necessarily for its high strength. |

because if you use a fg knot you rarely tie new leaders and you never get busted off at the leader knot when you get snagged. I have tried both the above knots and improved albright and they defs arent as strong as a fg. does take ages to tie though.
