Yeah one of the initially unforeseen benefits of the Wide brim cricket hat (for me as a baseball cap wearer) was the cooling effect of not having sun directly belting into my shoulders. Every cm of Shoulder that gets caught by the sun matters.
The Straw surf hat should probably also get a mention for its breath-ability and wider Brim - but they arent particularly durable or pack-able And the bigger the brim - the less transportable they get Last edited by yellow door 1; 30-11-2018 at 03:44 AM. |

I remember taking some footage of a mate and he whipped his hat off - I asked him why? (after the event), and he said it was too daggy - then he wore a baseball cap for the rest of the trip so he would look cool in photos - even though the wide brim hat offered better protection Last edited by yellow door 1; 30-11-2018 at 08:03 AM. |

I've always worn a broad brimmed hat, like in pic #2. A couple of years back I found a Columbia one that has mesh between the top and the brim. Its amazing how much cooler it is on a hot day and your hair stops you getting burnt in the mesh area.

They're good for shading your polaroids so you can spot fish - but they leave so many other bits of the head exposed |

It wasnt until I tried the cricket hat that I saw the benefits of having a good portion of my shoulders covered as well - but even the cricket hat isnt wide enough for my liking - I think I need a packable Sombrero Might go searching for the widest brim cricket hat there is |

When I know I will be standing in direct sun I use an old Berkley wide brim straw hat that I have had for a number of years. What I particularly like about it is the brim turns down a little all the way round keeping the sun off but allowing any breeze to pass through. Not a fashion statement ... but then again it just might be . Regards HBt.
