J braid versus others.

I’m looking to buy some reliable cheap braid for a reel I lend to friends and some good braid for bream for me. Salesperson pushed me to j braid which I’ve heard is crappy, but there was a new sort of j braid that the salesperson was spruiking which I think was called j braid grand. He said it was a higher end version and wasn’t replacing the original but the price was the same so not sure. Anyone tried it? What are people’s favorite braids now in cheap and cheerful, and no expense spared?

"It's a higher end J-braid that's not replacing the old J-braid but still costs the same" is Daiwanese for "We realise that J-Braid is complete horse sh!t but there's no way in hell we'll ever admit that so here's a new version that's less sh!t"

Daiwa have done this before, if you remember the original Tournament Hyper PE, it was utter garbage that on occasion literally fell apart in your hads. They then released Tournament Hyper Evo PE which is actually pretty decent.

Honestly, just get 6lb super PE.

I've got Duel Hardcore PE0.6 and 0.8 on all nearly all my reels. 8 Strand Japanese made and super smooth. You can pick it up for between $30 and $40 for a 150m spool. Thin and strong. 0.8 breaks at 16lbs and around .15mm dia. Its not cheap and cheerful or the most expensive but I like it.

+1 on the Duel Hardcore. I use the X8 (8 strand, you can also get 4 strand) and have it from PE 0.6 to PE 1.5 and can't fault the stuff.

i have a couple of reels spooled with 8 strand J braid and have never had a problem with it, one is 20lb and the other is 8lb, have used it for quite a while and no issues to date.

The stuff works, it's just cheap and nasty. It's thick, feels like butchers string, gets wind knots easily, fades quickly and is just all round average. I'd still take it over Fins or Rovex any day, but for the money you can get much nicer braids.

^^^^^^^agreed^^^^^^^^^

I imagine it’s been released and hyped up by knobs to compete with the 500 other brands of Everymans braid that’s out there

The poor cousin to the premium jap braids that are not quite as common and many times the price

I bought a few spools of Daiwa J braid 6 or 8 lb based on the advice of one of the well known bream anglers.

And yes, he was/is a Daiwa sponsored angler.

Cannot explain it but it was an absolute garbage when I spooled it on a 2000 size Daiwa SOL. The amount of wind knots per session was unbearable and I removed it from just a couple of trips.

On the other hand, I also spooled it on a 1000 size Shimano Rarenium and it is magic. No wind knots AT ALL! I still use it after like 2 years plus. No colour fading, still strong as she was after day one.
Thought of replacing but every time I think why would I?

The only explanation I have is that the 2000 size SOLs were used to fish plastics and the 1000 Rarenium is solely used to throw hard bodies.
So the retrieve is quite different and the line management / lay under tention of the HB lure on Rarenium makes it no effort at all.

So this is my observation first hand. I am a big fan of Unitika Aorika II and Sunline PE.
Another great braid is Yamatoyo Resin Sheller PE and it will be most certainly replacing the J Braid when time comes.

Cheers
