Ha Ha - those rambo knives are a menace - I watched a kid nearly hack his own toe off while we were hiking through Wilsons prom. He got a leech between his toes and thought he was going to die if he didnt cut it out. It was gross - after a couple of slashes - the leech just slid off in a river of blood.

These were the days before mobile phones as well - so he had to be piggy backed out after the bleeding was stopped.

Re the unsafe backyard work practices - I'm working my up to using my knee as a saw horse - but I'm not quite there yet

That's innovative and overkill, I love it.

But I gotta ask...why would you take a Rambo knife on a grade 5 excursion?

It was bought during the excursion...we were encouraged to take $10 and haggle with the sellers at the market - a few of us blew the lot on the rambo knives - hidden from teachers on the way back of course. It was good value, came with sheath, wire saw, compass, fishing gear and needle/thread to stich up your own wounds of course.

Ahhh...that explains it, sounds like you got a really good deal too. You've restored my faith in school excursion Dads.

Speaking of innovations

Do you have one of those bins that needs to be manually tripped by touching it or pressing rubbish against it - so you either get dirty hands or smear food scraps over the lid as you scrape them in. Then you have to wash the bin and your hands. They are a freaking nightmare.

If you do, I suggest you find one of these on a junk pile and take it home - its changed my life - no more washing my hands 20 times while cooking - no more juggling plates and holding the bin lid open while trying to scrape stuff into them. Foot pedal bins rule

It seems that the smell of fresh sawdust inspires people at work to come up with hair brained schemes - and this week was no exception.

Bloke at work sees the distance markers I made for testing the Bait Caster

He says - Can you make me a set
I says - why
He says - So I can "sight in" my Rifles
too easy - I says

He asked for an up-scaled version of what I'd done - but as soon as they were finished I thought - how the hell is he going to stick these into rocky ground in the middle of summer.

4 squirts of the circ saw and 16 spins of the drill later - The problem was solved.

In my experience the client always knows what they want - but rarely knows what they need

p.s they're not for shooting at - they're just to help set the distances for his targets

The next project was just a re-build of something I did 3 years ago - another light box for a mate who does tatts.

Then Tatt man is showing off my millimeter perfect light box to another bloke - and here comes the next order.

This other bloke does a bit of acting/theater work in his spare time and he needs 60 wooden triangle chocks to prop up props with.

I'd post photos but I'm sure you all know what a triangle of wood looks like

man, I wish I had taken photos of my old light box... It was a "Bat Light" from bunnings inside a cardboard box, which was then taped on top of another cardboard box that I had folded into a triangular prism to create an angled base (much more ergonomic as it stops you from hunching) with an old glass fridge shelf for the surface. Worked wonders.

That taper is clever - and something I will incorporate, once I convince the client of its necessity I might make mine infinitely adjustable with a set of rubber based bolts that screw in and out of the base via t-nuts - but as usual I will take full credit for the idea and give no credit where its due

and there is only time between me and finding an old fridge shelf

I've still got 5 t-nuts hiding some where under this bench top - (it looks a bit messier now since I added 4 more drawers and just started stuffing stuff in on top of other stuff)
