Yamaha 4 stroke 2001 noise
Hi all,
Just wanted to know if this noise on me engine is right. When I turn the motor on at home in neutral sounds fine when I put it in gear there's a loud ticking noise coming from the bottom of the engine near the propeller, when I acclelerate the noise dissapers. It's a till steer pull start engine. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you. |

Hi mate,
I just bought this boat yesterday and don't have much experience with boats. So the noise isent normal? Is it exspensive to change the steering components if that's the problem? Thanks mate |

So your not hearing/or testing with the motor in the water?

Hi mate,
In the water when I tested it out couldn't hear a thing! Not until I got home and flushed the engine out when I put it in gear you could hear the noise but as soon as I accelerated slightly the noise goes. But in the water you can't hear it. Didn't hear it cause I didn't no about it but going at 1 to test it again today and see if the noise is still there even if the motor is in the water rather than the hose. I tested the boat with the guy I bought it off before I bought it off him it's a must for me! But didn't hear a thing when I was testing it with him. |

Hey mate I think there is a fair bit of paranoia when you buy a second hand boat, motorcycle, car etc.
The noise could be anything or nothing although my guess is its normal low speed (idle) vibration causing some loose components to knock together when it's not in the water. My point is you have brought the boat now and if it has a major mechanical fault then there is nothing you can do about it. Make sure it's serviced and keep an eye on the fluids (oil) and the tell tail and relax, four stroke motors have a lot of hours in them. Enjoy your boat!

All motors sound very different out of water - if you can't hear a thing when in the water there's a good chance the there's nothing to worry about.

If u have just brought it u should take it and get it checked out, regardless of any noise u can hear.
The noise is most likely nothing but if u take it to someone u trust u can set ur mind at ease, nothing worse than being a long way from the boat ramp and not having %100 confidence in ur motor. |

I had the exhaust baffles break off inside my 4stroke Merc, rattled a fair bit when washing it out but could hardly notice in it in the water. If your worried, take it a mechanic and get them to check it over.

Hi mate,
Yeah most likely I will do that I'm going to service it soon anyways. If you run your outboard for like 2minutes without water will it cause any damage? |

Always run your motor on water muffs with water flow into the muffs when out of water.
If you run it without water it can overheat your engine and cause damage Also you can damage/melt the impeller in your water pump which helps to cycle through Your motor to keep the entire motor cool. Last edited by smokindrags; 06-01-2013 at 02:55 AM. |

If the motor is on for to minutes will it cause that damage?

possibly, bottom line is have the muffs on and water flowing whenever you start the engine!

Yes it probably could cause damage of some sort mate, without water cooling it down it would heat up a lot and possibly cause things to melt or distort, like others said try not to start it unless its in water or has muffs on. Be on the safe side and have someone check it out for you.
