I just bought a Cannon powershot D10, inital impression on that is pretty good.

Specs are a little better, water proof 10m, 2m shock proof, 12mp. In the looks department, they are both kinda "waterproof" models Also in the same price range, I got mine for $575.

Not much help But the powershot D10 only just came on the market so I thought I would mention it incase you hadn't seen it.

Hey wobbie (or anyone else with the miju 6000 / 8000),

hows the video quality on these things? it's 640 x 480 30fps max isn't it?

just wondering if there's a time limit on the video, or if it just goes until your memory runs out.

also hows the sound quality on the video?

trying to toss up between one of these or a pentax optio W80 or even possibly a panasonic lumix dmc ft1.

The olympus seems the best so far, the only thing i don't like is the fact that it uses xd card, and also that the videos are only 640 x480.

I got a 6000 a few weeks back. Haven't used it enough to really review it but it does reasonable video for a still camera. Annoying thing is you can't zoom whilst filming.

It struggles a bit with night time portrait shots when there's not enough light to pre focus. I find the auto just can't get it right and you have to try all combinations of manual settings. There may be an auto setting I haven't tried yet though.

As a knock about camera with reasonable but not amazing picture quality it seems pretty decent. After destroying too many phones and cameras with water it is nice to be able to not stress about it getting wet.

Only annoying thing and this would be the same for any underwater camera is once you have taken an underwater shot you end up with drops of water on the lense. Meaning you have to take some sort of a cleaning cloth with you if you want to do an underwater shot followed closely by an above water.

Sound quality is ok but not amazing check the vids.

You seem to be able to film for as long as your memory card will allow. It comes up with a time remaining counter whilst filming.

Thanks mate, just what I wanted. Those videos look quite impressive. I wasn't expecting the quality to be very good underwater, but the colours in those videos are great (especially in the first and last one).

This has made the decision even more difficult for me now though, really can't decide between the panasonic FT1 and the olympus miju 6000.

The only issue i have with the olympus is the fact that it only takes xd cards which are relativity small (<2gb) compared to the FT1 which takes SD cards (up to 32gb or so) .

The issue I have with the FT1 is that is the price...

I've got a 4 gig Micro SD card in an XD card adapter that works in the 6000 fine. I may be wrong but I doubt those cameras will even write to a card over 4 gig maybe 8 gig max.

Like I said I might be wrong about that but I know some cameras are limited in the size memory card then can use.

IMHO it is better to run a bunch of 4 gig cards anyway instead of putting all your images on one card that could corrupt and you'll lose everything. Not such a big deal for daily use but if you're travelling and don't have the chance to back up your images it could be an issue.

Also the 6000 has just been replaced by a 6010 that's 12MP instead of 10MP.

IMO 10MP is heaps anyway unless you're pro and if so you wouldn't be using a compact point and shoot anyway.

Bonus is the 6000 are going pretty cheap and I have seen them around the $330 mark.

I have FT-1 and its great. When looking at reviews of the Olympus and Pana. It seemed that the Olympus was more "rugged" and the FT1 produced slightly better still pictures. The 720p HD vid of the FT1 is also a bonus and looks great on the big tv's. The video quality was what swayed my in the end for recording the family events. Unless you want it for the video recording, the price of the Olympus is hard to go past though. Horses for courses really and here is how I look at it.

Pana FT1
- 720p HD video
- SD Card
- Best quality pics from waterproof camera
But most people would be happy with the Olympus pics from this thread

- Great Price
- Ruggedness
