When you get the shape right, what's your plan for the finishing?

Chuck the rod in the freezer for an hour or a bucket of iced water - slip on some room temp textured heat shrink - then blast it with the heat gun - and hope the foam doesnt melt

There have been some unexpected benefits aswell. The tape doesnt breath and the insulating qualities of the foam, means it keeps your hand nice and warm on those cold winter nights

Or if the heat shrink is too warm for summer months - A more breathable option is that rod tape - like the stuff tennis players wrap the base of their rackets with.

Both options come in non-slip finish and all the colours of the rainbow

Its a one minute job to see if its worth while. And its even quicker to get rid of it if you dont like it

Just grab some dense foam and duct tape and get wrapping.

Just makes sure if you are going to cut or sand the foam - that you do it over a bin - coz the clean up will take longer than the rod mod if you dont

Get a poly bag, some expanding EPS foam or some 2 part A+B foam and mould up your grip in your hand while on the rod.

Then you could either coat it in epoxy to harden it and then put it onto the rod with the grip tape material over it.

That is a brilliant idea -That would get it done right the first time - the ultimate custom grip.

How quick does that stuff set

Edit - Just had a quick look = 3 mins doesnt sound too long to wait

Here;s what I found at bunnings - do any of them dry quick and strong - I have next to no experience with expanding foam

Most of the spray type foam fillers will work, may get messy so I would tape up the whole rod seat with a flattened out plastic bag and then do that over the top.

I think the Parfix is similar to the stuff I used to get from Masters... Cheap and cheerful my friend.

I don't know much about expanding foam, but if I had to pick one from the above mentioned it'd definitely be the space invader...

Just the way I like it - thanks Slazmo.

I was hoping to tape off the bits of the rod I didnt want foam on and mould it directly to the foam rod grip - (I was thinking of a snap loc bag so I can insert the foam from the back similar to the pic below) Then I can just shape the back with sand paper later.

I'll do a couple of tests in the bags with out attaching it to the rod first

What I was suggesting is cover the grip in plastic so that you can still hold it conventionally as you would if it were not added to.

get a plastic bag in the hand so that you can spray it into and then hold onto the rod so that your hand will create the anatomically moulded grip - you'll have to create a bit of a void so that the foam filler will expand into where your hand is / will be comfortably.

Catch my drift?
