I am by no means an expert but I believe red spot disease (Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome) can have many causes, from acid sulfate runoff to chemical pollution, and no doubt pathogens of sorts. I am guessing that if the acid sulfate runoff or chemicals disperse and the red spot isn't to far advanced, then the fish should recover but if it is a pathogen causing the problem then maybe not - so I guess it is important to know the cause to determine if the fish should be released or killed.
