Just a warning - if you buy the same tubes I did - you're going to get black hands every time you firmly grip the aluminium.

edit - I just tested my original net handle and I get black hands off that aswell.

I spose I've never noticed it before because I mainly use that net while livie fishing at night and I usually wash my hands before going home.

I've done a tiny bit of reading on the phenomena - but I cant find the cure.

Is there a way to treat aluminium tubes so they dont leave a black residue on bare hands and clothing?

try polishing your pole i had the same issue with the rails on my tinny, polish them when i can be bothered & no black.

you may need to add some sort of grip to your pole after polishing it

Thanks for the tip - I share your concerns about polishing effecting grip - if its a choice between black hands and being able to lift the net out of the water - I'll choose the former.

I've got some Spray on clear coat? I could just rub the poles down with acetone then give them a couple of coats with the spray - do you reckon that would work? Could even sprinkle some sand over it as it drys for a super grip

I'll do google search on painting aluminium and see what turns up. Or I could just plaster it with fisheries fish ruling stickers - they seem to have a great bond on aluminium

I'm hearing some noise about latex paint - and it sounds like sanding then acetone wash - then dry before painting - is the go

Buy some Rustoluem 2x paint+primer spray paint.
Sticks to anything even glass and Plastic.
Good coverage too.

A can is around $15 from the giant green Sausage Sizzle stand (they also sell hardware )

Larry, I think the heat shrink may be the ideal - no need for future painting. There is the heat shrink with glue that would then bod to the ali. might even be worth a sanding before heat shrink & glue.

This thread should be moved to the innovative man's home!

$1 for rivets
$53 for aluminium and push button clips (+$15 for postage)
$5 for clear shrink tube

I already had the tools to make it happen.

So all up it cost about $74 in parts to make 4 x 1.2 meter extension poles.

They're made from 25mm diameter aluminium tubing with 1.2mm wall thickness. (blokes who make lbg marlin gaffs use 2mm wall thickness)

I really only needed half the materials for the spots I fish because my Net handle adds another metre.

But I figured I buy extra just in case I made a mistake - Or wanted to fish off the "Westgate bridge"

The most important tool was a small round file to fix the slight errors I made in my pilot holes for the push button springs - and the holes on the main shaft -

On the first pole - I just jammed the drill bit back in there and wrenched it around until everything fit - but it made the holes too big - 2 blokes still couldnt pull the poles apart but there was a bit of slop which made the first button depress slightly under heavy load - the second button wasnt going anywhere but I still didnt like it.

When I first made it - everything was millimetre perfect - but when I tried to put the poles together in a different order - they wouldnt fit. I wanted to be able to put them together in any order so there was a bit of mucking around

I had to hack some bits off and file some holes to make sure the poles could be put together in any sequence. A "poofteenth" of a millimetre, makes a big difference in the pole making game

fyi this was the stuff I used - its got some rubber criss-crossed in it for extra grip. needs a bit more heat than standard heat shrink but mine has held up well so far.

$3.50 a metre would blow my budget on a 6m pole - but that stuff looks awesome
