SHG Bearing Vs HRCB Bearing

Hi guys,

Looking at getting some bearing kit from Hedgehog Studio.

What is the difference between SHG and HRCB Bearing?

Hedgehog recommend that HRCB for saltwater use but can SHG survive in saltwater environment?

Lastly, do I need a spool bearing pin removal kit for spinning reel? Can you guys recommend any tools needed as well..

Thanks
Matthew

You don't need a spool pin removal tool for the daiwa reels as the bearing (plastic or steel roller ) stops the pin falling out.
There is a small spring clip ( bearing stopper ring ) above the bearing these are handy to get a few as they like to take flight..

As for HRCB over SHG, your maintenance regime will dictate wether they are worth the extra money. Mine (HRCB) have a coating of grease on the outside to help against water ingress.

As the spool doesn't rotate at high speeds when drag is taken it is fine to grease these bearings lightly.

I fish solely in the salt, so I've always gone with the HRCB's. Sure they cost a little more but I reckon being more corrosion resistant outweighs that.

You don't need a pin remover for a spin reel, only a baitcaster.
The tools you use for a regular service are all you want.

HRCB's have a stupidly thing ceramic coating of sorts on the outer and inner race and attain a higher price point over standard bearings for that marketing factor.

Bearings are same same internally and overall in build.

Once that ceramic coating (which is in the microns thick segment) wears off your left with a typical 440C stainless bearing which'll rust as quick as a normal bearing - on the races which is where the magic happens.

Because the spool support bearings are largely unused, I would honestly say going a bearing thats unshielded for the better parts would be the better choice as shields can harbour water and left unseen or unkempt will stuff out quick enough.

Thanks for the input, guys.

My other question would be by adding more bearings in the reel, does that means a smoother reel? I suppose this will have better result on lower end reel than a higher end reel, am I right?

Can you feel the difference after adding more bearings to your reel?

IMHO not necessarily. Certainly means more cost with replacement if you go dropping your reel in salt water.

As long as bushes are well lubricated and are in serviceable condition they can be as smooth as bearings and last for many years without any issues.

Heaps of variables exist for the addition of bearings over the standard bushes.

Depends upon the reel some may only need a few bearings to make them better some more , which would make it more reasonable to just buy a better reel in the first place.

All my reels have spool support bearings and bearings in the handles.

I believe the spool is smoother combining bearings with carbon drag washers.

Remember there could be a bearing under the drag washer stack also..
