use natural colours in clear water.

use bright orange or fluro in muddy water.

I love vibes in discoloured or muddy water...it works for me!

I learnt something new today.

What About Width?

Quote:
It’s worth stressing that this loss or alteration of visible colors occurs in both the vertical and the horizontal or diagonal planes. So, 40 feet of vertical depth has roughly the same impact on light waves and color perception as 40 feet of horizontal or diagonal separation between object and observer. In other words, a red lure may look black when viewed at a depth of 40 feet, but it will also appear black, or at the least brown or very dark grey, when viewed from the side at a distance of 40 feet, even if it’s traveling right up in the surface layer.

.... And depends on what species is looking at your lure. Bream for example can only see blue and green, so red always appears black to them, irrespective of depth.

Personally I go for natural greens and browns in slightly stained waters (most situations down here) Black or red in turbid or muddy waters. Translucent/light colours in gin clear water.

At night I also run reds and blacks as these give the most contrast and silhouette.

Most of my lures show a counter-shading pattern (dark back, lighter belly) as most baitfish are counter-shaded for camouflage.

I put colour selection about fourth priority when selecting a hardbody:

Running depth
Profile
Action
Colour
Taste/smell

Deepest I fish is 10m so light absorption and colour shift isn't a big deal for my fishing.

Two schools of thought on colour: make it stand out like dogs balls so it's easily seen or make it look like natural forage and something they normally eat. Perhaps the choice depends on whether it's a reaction bite or lunch.

Just re-read the OP ... sunny days vs overcast I don't change my lure colour, I change where I go looking for the bream

For me in discoloured water Dark Colours, Solid Colours, Bright Colours especially Gold

Clear water your natural baitfish colours

The other thing I look for is UV colour, I like to know what lures have UV and I will make sure I mix it up with the UV see if it makes a difference on the day.

I tried to experiment yesterday at the Nong.

Two archbacks, one is JU017G (my favourite) and one in "carmen red". Same profile, action and the same running depth.

Was standing in the same spot, casting left, right and centre. Had numerous hits and hook-ups on JU017G and NONE on carmen red.

The day was overcast with some wind. The water clarity was about a metre.

So, to me the colour selection is more important than action and running depth in the same lure.

Cheers

I think though the above highlights you got depth, profile and action right. Then colour was the deciding factor.

Would be fascinating if you decide to experiment again if you use the same colour but in a different profiled or actioned lure. That would indicate whether colour was more important than profile or action on that particular day.

Or are you saying you retrieved differently and at different depth between the two lures ?

No, the retrieve was the same as well as the depth as I was standing on the same spot casting both lures in the same areas of the lake.

I spent about 10 minutes all up doing it to ensure I was fishing with both lures within that time slot.

Makes sense. Makes life challenging if all factors have to align to get them to hit it

I think depth is pretty straight-forward - you're either in the strike zone or not. Action seems fairly straight-forward too - there's a limited number of retrieves to work through (ignoring slight variations). Colour and profile seems a bit more whimsical and down to the fish on the day. Next time I'm getting hits on a lure I'll try changing profile but keep colour the same/similar. I'm expecting no hits but shall be interesting to experiment.
