If you get a bit of water pooling up around the front door when it pisses down - it might be worth getting a sand bag or 2 - or dig some trenches to divert the flow

The bloke in the video says its going to be pretty close to a 10 out of 10 for rainfall - he reckons half of Melbourne will never have seen rain like this.

Friday night and Saturday are when the floods are expected (update - Sunday is the Mother-load) - if you live in a dip - Valley - or bottom of a hill - prevention is better than soggy carpets

I was just thinking who was going to cop it the worst and I reckon there will be a few nervous business owners along the Yarra - None more nervous that the bloke who owns the Ponyfish Island Bar.

"It is an event that poses a threat to life, there will be a massive amount of lightning, there will be roads cut, flood waters," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Scott Williams warned.

"I think this event will turn farms into lakes."

A severe weather warning has been issued for all of Victoria as the bureau prepares for what could be the state's most significant rain event in more than 20 years.

The city will be lashed with more than 100 millimetres of rain – almost double its December average rainfall – over Friday and Saturday alone with thunderstorms and hail likely to accompany the downpour.

Melbourne's catchments could receive 150 millimetres, causing serious flooding. The heaviest rainfall for Melbourne is set to come on Friday night with more than 10 millimetres an hour expected.

"Half the inhabitants of Melbourne have probably never seen something like this," Mr Williams said.

"This is a vast, intense, high impact event for this state."

I know up here in Queensland they've over hyped a cataclysmic weather event this week and many many many before.

I read an article saying that the SES has told people to disregard the media hype on this storm.

Here's hoping that its a good flush to systems and little damage occurs.

Apparently the over exaggeration of extreme weather dates back to the Sydney to Hobart race in 1998, when 6 people died and a heap more had to be rescued. Ever since then BOM etc have been instructed to err on the side of caution when it comes to forecasting potentially extreme weather, which is why we have had so many extreme weather events predicted that have never actually eventuated. So I guess these forecasts could be taken with a grain of salt. That said, erring on the side of caution is not a bad thing.

I wish I had a dollar for everytime the BOM has predicted something with est on the end.....hottest, wettest, driest, etc, etc. They're too busy fiddling temp records these days to do accurate forecasting.

Dont you blokes remember the Tsunami warning of 2009 - a woman strolling at Lakes Entrance got her sneakers wet (although reports cannot confirm if it was Tsunami related)

All jokes aside - it will get wet - so if you are in an area prone to flooding - take precautions

Just checked the Dam levels - but I'm not sure how much rain is required to top them up. I'll post some updates after the rain
