Usually they get smacked when they're on the drop, or even sitting on the bottom (sometimes for as long as 15 seconds). When this is happening I just watch the slack for little ticks, then slowly wind up the slack, when it comes tight give it a bit of a set.
The other way I use them is across the flats, work them quickly like a walk the dog, and when a fish has a crack but doesn't hook up, pause it and let it sink down. 8/10 times they'll turn around and absolutely crunch it - for this I usually just use braid

Yeah it seems that with the tiny size of these, they physically can't avoid the hooks. Had a chat to SM about SM's () and he was saying that he sometimes crushes his barbs, so that they can penetrate as deep as possible on the initial pickup

As said by jords, most of the bites are on the drop and they chew the hooks pretty good. On some days with the bigger 55mm Zip baits or alike they bite the body and in clear water you can see them do it. I think S factor helps. My bite to hook up rate is much higher with the less than 40mm size SM's

Yep good size for when they grab the back of your softies. Throw a SM and wham.

Yep SM would know more about SM's than NE 1 else. I think thats a good idea. I will crush them down on one of my ones and see if I get better hook sets

Cheers
Chris

Yeah i have used Stick minnows across the flats like that a few times with good results. I have found that if the fish want them they get smacked pretty hard. Have also found them a bit hit and miss on my local, some days they are interested and others they arent and i have to go back to placcies ect. but that goes for all lures really, just have to mix it up.
