Rods for Whiting

Ok gents, I am looking for a couple of rods for whiting, thinking glass and approx 9 foot long.

If you have any suggestions for blanks, off the shelf rods or a custom builder who does good work close to BNE please let me know.

Dave

Specs 9 foot long (1 or 2 piece) 3-6? kilo line

Not sure about 9ft but the epic 5wt glass is supposed to be a ripper.

What sort of whiting needs 3-6 kg line? I would have thought 2-4kg would have been ample. Maybe check out some Gary Howard rods. He makes great surf gear.

Daiwa Air Edge Surf 9'6" 2pc 2-4kg is worth a look at about $200 I think.

Starlo Stix Shore spin 902
Not glass but quite a soft graphite so shows bites well. Makes a very nice bait rod and casts in the 1oz to 2oz range. You can get them from around $100

i use a 10ft 6 wilson blackfish rod, there a really lighjt floppy model then theres one thats slightly stiffer i use the slighty stiffer one, i use 3 or 4 yabbies on a paternoster, which then results in 3 or 4 whiting or bream on at once and it pulls them out with ease. IF u fish the beach for them, try casting a centre pin 25m to a gutter, busted knuckles and big bream hahaha

Thanks for all the advice, appreciate it. I have sort of settled on a Gary Howard 9.0 foot estuary rod that is a 2 piece glass with a nice slow action. Will be looking at two of them with matching shimano baitcasters......they should do the trick.

In the mean time I have a live fibre 9 footer that I had built for me when I was posted to Newcastle (completely forgot about that handing in the shed). It is a bit crisper but will give it a try also which is about time as it has never been fished....

I have had trouble catching whiting now that I have the boat and a recent sit down and chat with an old timer I met on my last trip to Cabbage Tree Point in QLD will hopefully set me on the path to more consistent catches of whiting.
