Was he trying to sell you a bottle of water as well?

I can't believe some people working in tackle shops

I am using CALs on my carbontex washers, no problem. Why substitute?

Just wondering
Is it alright to use oil on drag? I have been spraying CRC tackle guard and adding oil to the drag
Now thinking of it its drag is like brakes
I always thought it was oil on the felt washers as brand new reel drags felt wet/smooth.
and grease was for the body.

I would never use oil or plain grease on any drag system. Drag grease is heavily fortified with teflon, normal grease is not.

No, reel lube is not made for drags. Either Cal's drag Grease or Shimano drag grease is the way to go. I have also had success with a synthetic bicycle grease called Finish Line, it is teflon fortified and has great waterproofing properties as well.

Petroleum based lubricants should not be used for drag washers as they cause drags to become sticky. This is obviously undesirable.

Drag grease formulations are comprised of a synthetic lubricant fortified with Teflon.

Shimano, Daiwa and Cal Sheets have developed greases specifically for this purpose.

Years ago i tried normal grease and yeah it was making the drag sticky, now use cals.

With my 2500 reel i had to pour water over the drag when i hooked onto a 500pound marlin..had little choice in keeping it cool.Got spooled.

Yep, squeeze it all out into a little tub with a screw on lid and tab your fingers into that and massage into the washer itself, not too much nor too little.

Thats all I use for drag washers be it fibre or carbon, the stuff from the tube has a lower NLGI than that from the tubs (whatever sizes) its a bit more 'cakier' for such a word.

ha ha all good

Its also good for rubber seals and can be thinned down with a light oil like Inox MX3 to a soft grease slurry for lip seals like in waterproofing, O rings and the drag knob seals.
