Why arent we Hardening our hook points
A bloke at work saw me sharpening my latest batch of cheap jigheads the other day.
He says - "why dont you Heat treat the points and quench them in oil" and I said - "I dont know - wouldnt that make them brittle" he says - "Yeah but they would be harder and hold their points longer" But I dont know enough about it to offer an informed comment. Has anyone else got some thoughts on this process in relation to hook points Last edited by yellow door 1; 04-02-2019 at 05:40 PM. |

I’d rather not have brittle hooks, especially on trebles in smaller sizes
Hear treating is a pretty particular exercise, and if you screw it up on something as fine as a light gauge treble, who knows what could result. I think I’d just stick to the old hand sharpen and replace as necessary Heat treating, in my highly unqualified opinion, is more beneficial to solid tooling, like knife blades and chisels, given they have been the mass to absorb height heats without damage/deformation. Don’t melt your jig heads if you do get keen on it, nothing worse that a bit of hot metal splatter!
