Safety reminder

I visit some pretty hairy spots when rock fishing and am pretty careful with safety gear, including auto inflating life jacket, ‘grenade’ style life ring and rockhoppers. Thought I’d mention that it pays to check your stuff as I got a pretty scary surprise when I lost my footing on a wet slope that ran straight down to deep water and for a second could see myself sliding into the water where waves crashed against rocks. Didn’t happen, but was fortunate it was a low swell. That was good luck more than good planning because it turned out the metal spikes on my boots had worn down without me realising.

You’d think I would have learned my lesson but about a week after that I had to wedge myself in a crevice as a large wave sat up on rocks and fell on me. This time I’d decided a quick fish from a seemingly safe rockat the end of a beach didn’t warrant a life jacket. Bloody silly. The wave was more a big splash than a direct hit but still shouldn’t have been in that spot and once again, it was just luck that I wasn’t in more trouble from it. Saturated and cut up a but was ok.

Many years ago I was in a similar situation and learnt a lot, quick.
Glad to hear you're OK.

Great words of honesty with a great message; reminds me of my younger rock fishing days.

Watch the tide too. A couple of years ago, I was fishing from some rocks that were backed by high cliffs. I knew this area wasn't the place to be at high tide as the waves smashed right up against the cliff face. On this particular day the fishing had been good and I lost track of the time, but the incoming tide soon reminded me. The walk out along the rocks was long and arduous and I didn't allow myself enough time. I ended up spending a few anxious and very wet hours perched precariously part way up the cliff face with waves surging around my legs.
