I'm no pro in this department as I have never done it. So my reply is not to be trusted
But as I understand it - when you heat wood that has just been cut - there are lots of resins, moisture and fibres that become more flexible and stretchy. The wood can be bent and if you hold it in that position, it will reset as it cools.
A naked flame takes moisture out of the wood which causes it to harden aswell.
If wood cant be bent into shape at room temperature, you can use steam, friction or fire.
But as I mentioned earlier - I dont know exactly what I'm talking about
